By Mallory Gleich As the Arcadia Titans Basketball team prepared for its first game on November 19, practices were full of energy and hope for an explosive season. The boys ran drills up and down the court while head coach Stephen Danford guided from the sidelines. It was clear the boys were excited for their first scrimmage game against Red Mountain in Mesa. “We’re a young team, but we’re fast and we can shoot the ball well. We’ll be quick up and down the floor,” said senior Carter Murphy. Murphy has played guard for three years with Arcadia. “Once we get our mindset right, we can grind on defense and beat some good teams this year,” Murphy said. “Being with the guys makes it fun, makes it easier to come to practice, but the grind and the hard work are what makes us a good team.” Murphy says the discipline basketball has taught him carries over to other parts of his life. “I have to make sure I’m practicing outside of team practice and getting better and improving, and that’s carried over into my schoolwork and family life,” Murphy said. Murphy has recently committed to playing basketball at the Air Force Academy, but before, he would like to see his team make it to the final four in the playoffs. James Hodge-Green is a senior point guard on the team, and some of his thoughts mirror Murphy’s when it comes to this season’s team. “Our strengths are our chemistry and our speed,” Hodge-Green said. “One of our weaknesses might be our size, but that’s a small/big problem.” Hodge-Green says the easiest part of being on the team is building relationships and the most difficult is balancing basketball life with school life. “Basketball is about hard work. If you want something, you have to put in the repetition, like with a math problem,” Hodge-Green said. Before each game, he watches previous game videos, practices to make 100 shots, says a prayer, and listens to “Dreams and Nightmares” by Meek Mill. Before Hodge-Green heads out into the post-high school world, he would like to bring Arcadia basketball its first state championship. Danford, who has served as head coach at Arcadia since 2012, says the defense is really looking good this year. “We can shoot the ball really well, but we need to be more physical. That seems to be changing along with the mentality of the team,” Danford said. This year’s team has five seniors. The younger team doesn’t have a lot of experience, but the boys are continuing to learn about depth and all aspects of the game.
