PHOTOS COURTESY OF RICK TURNER By Mallory Gleich Ah, 1960. It was the year of bell bottoms, tie-dye shirts, and of course, Beatlemania. It was also the year Coach Bob Hendricks led the Arcadia Titans to their first and only undefeated football season. Between 1960 and 1965, the Arcadia Titans were a bonafide powerhouse, winning two state championships, including the 12-0 1960 season. The team achieved a ranking of No. 8 in the country during that span. Hendricks, along with assistant coaches Ben Anderson and Lou Hallman, had acquired nine first- team, all-state players and were ranked No. 1 in Arizona in their classification. Lee Ferguson, Gary Deak, Rick Turner and Michael Lee were teammates on that 1960 team and still beam with pride when recalling those days. “Beating Sunnyslope was the most memorable because they were one of the few teams that was actually favored over us going in, and they were much bigger than us,” said Turner, who scored 14 touchdowns in 1960. rushing yards to the Titans offense in 1960, cementing the team as a speedy force to be reckoned with. “The bottom line is this: it was a really special year. We weren’t very big, but we’d been playing together, and had a lot of speed,” added Lee. That season’s game at Winslow featured some theatrics, but it didn’t faze Arcadia. “We were in Winslow, and they had a big ‘W’ on the field that they lit on fire. Toward the end of the game, the two arms of the W had fallen off and formed an A,” Turner said. Arcadia beat Winslow 47 to 19. The 1960 Titans were not only fast, but also played the game with swagger. “When we were playing Phoenix Indian School, one of the linemen had a feather on the back of his helmet. By the end of the first play, our lineman was wearing a feather on the back of his helmet,” Lee said. “He stole the feather and taped it to the back of his helmet,” Ferguson added. Arcadia shut out Phoenix Indian School 34-0. It’s been 57 years since the men last took the football field at Arcadia High School, but their friendships have lasted through the years. “We get together every few months. We have a real camaraderie between us,” Lee said. After high school, Lee went to college and entered the steel industry. Turner became a lawyer and moved to Gilbert. Deak played baseball at University of Arizona and eventually made it into the school’s hall of fame. Ferguson went to Northern Arizona University and was a combat medic in Vietnam. Turner recalls that things didn’t look good for the Titans at halftime of the Sunnyslope game, when they found themselves on the wrong side of a low-scoring 6-7 game. But to Hendricks’ credit, he didn’t yell at his team to get going. “We waited for the coaches and they never came in. They just let us sit there and stew and it made us think about what we were doing,” Turner said. “We came out and beat them 34 to 7.” Running back Quentin Gregory added 1,112 Gary Deak Ricky Turner Michael Lee Looking back: Arcadia’s first undefeated football team X AV I E R C O L L E G E P R E PA R AT O R Y FITZGERALD HALL X AV I E R C O L L E G E P R E PA R AT O R Y FITZGERALD HALL Xavier College Preparatory is a Catholic community that strives to prepare young women of faith with the knowledge, skills, and integrity to meet the challenges of a changing global society in a positive and productive manner. 9th Grade Application for 2019 - 2020 Available online NOW, due January 28, 2019 Xavier Entrance Exam Saturday, Jan. 12 or Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019 at 7:30 a.m. Registration for exam and application information at xcp.org Affording a Xavier Education Financial Aid Workshops available to interested parents during the Entrance Exam Testing, Jan. 12 and Jan. 26
51 DECEMBER 2018 By Jennifer Marshall Playing little league has been a childhood staple for generations of kids in Arcadia. Arcadia Little League is registering kids for its 2019 season through January 25. Eligible players must either reside in or attend school in Arcadia. The regular season begins in March with the all-stars playing in June and finishing in July. Established in 1957, Arcadia Little League has been going strong for more than 60 years. President Jack Krawczyk attributes the league’s success to not only its talented players but also to its many faithful and dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to make play possible for their young athletes. In fact, everyone involved with the League— from mangers, to coaches, to team parents— volunteers their time for the betterment of the kids and the teams. “The Arcadia Little League is still prospering,” said Krawczyk, “and what sets us apart is the great community we live in and the facilities we use.” Practices and games are held on fields at Camelback Christian Church, Echo Canyon School and Ingleside Middle School. “We’re really close partners with the church and the Scottsdale School District,” Krawczyk said. “Without those people and those connections, our League would not survive.” The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation is another loyal partner of the Arcadia Little League. “They’re a big supporter of our group,” Krawczyk said, “and they provide all of our uniforms for the year.” The League works to pay forward the generosity it receives. Because it doesn’t have to buy uniforms, it’s able to take player registration fees and put that money into field upkeep and scholarships for athletes who cannot otherwise afford to participate. Arcadia Little League operates baseball and softball divisions, and all combined, it has from 850 to 900 kids on average playing. SOFTBALL DIVISIONS AND AGES • Softball Junior Varsity Ages 5-6 • Softball Varsity Ages 7-8 • Softball Minors Ages 9-10 • Softball Major Ages 11-12 “We do our best to make sure Little League is fun,” Krawczyk said. “All it takes for me to get excited is to see a smile on a kid’s face.” For more: arcadialittleleague.com.
