60 NOVEMBER 2018 By Mallory Gleich Most people don’t find themselves in a swimming pool at 5 o’clock in the morning, but for Alexa Teneyck and Isabella Fratesi, it’s part of their everyday routine. Teneyck and Fratesi are part of the girl’s swim team at Arcadia High School. Swimming has been a part of their lives since they were young, and they have no intentions of stopping after graduation. “It’s hard to separate the person from the swimmer because the sport has been intertwined with my life since I was just a little kid,” Fratesi said. “I love to race, I love to hang out with my teammates, and I love to work.” Fratesi joined a swim club when she was 6 years old after participating in recreational swimming. Her mom ran track and her father played football, basketball and baseball, but Fratesi was drawn to the water and has been ever since. She also swims for an outside club, and altogether has competed in more than 250 meets since she began swimming. Teneyck is also part of a competitive swimming team outside of AHS with the Scottsdale Aquatic Club as well as the Phoenix Swim Club. “I love how individualistic it is, you hold yourself accountable for everything. Everyone’s goal is to get faster…that will show at meets. So, I train my hardest every day to achieve my goals because I hold myself accountable and have a lot of dedication,” Teneyck said. Teneyck has been swimming since she was eight years old and was the only person in her family to swim until this year when her brother joined the swim team. Teneyck and Fratesi’s daily routine starts off with swim practice at 5 a.m. until school starts at 7 a.m.. After a full day of education, they head back to the pool for two hours of swim practice, and then home to dinner and homework “and bed hopefully at a decent hour.” “We race for our school teams on Thursday afternoons, and sometimes we have swim club meets that go from Thursday-Sunday. We eat a lot, nap a lot, and practice… a lot,” Fratesi said. “It is nice to see athletes who work hard and dedicate their lives to something pay off for them by helping them get to college. These two girls have worked so hard since they were young with the goal of swimming in college and it is nice that they are realizing their dreams,” said Coach Erica McClurg. In the near future, Fratesi plans on swimming for Columbia University and becoming a journalism student. Teneyck will be swimming for the University of Idaho.
