And like peanut butter and jelly, no Friday night game is complete without a magnificent high school marching band to wow the crowd during halftime. Whether it’s your child or grandchild out on the field or you’re just a loyal Arcadia High School Titans fan, there was some fancy footwork this fall from both the players and those all-stars in The Spirit of Arcadia Marching Band. The Band is a true comeback story and a testament to the hard work and perseverance of its students and their faithful Band Director, Jan Gardner. When Gardner arrived at Arcadia High in 2013, he found the marching band to be pretty much nonfunctioning. While this had been the status for a while, school administrators were eager to rebuild their marching band and return it to its former glory. “We started very slow,” Gardner said. “Basically from nothing, and within a couple years, we placed Runner Up in Division III at the 2016 ABODA (Arizona Band and Orchestra Director’s Association) State Championship, and in 2017, we won the ABODA State Champion in Division III.” In 2017, The Band took a major step and became the AZMBA (Arizona Marching Band Association) Class 2A State Champions. Students commit to marching band just like other students commit to a sports team. Band season opens in late April when freshmen and other new band members come together to begin musical rehearsals. After the school year ends in May, members attend Summer Band Camp where they learn and perfect the visual marching drills and movements that compose a performance. Then, in August, the marching band class meets every day at 6:30 a.m. before the official school day even starts. “During the season, we participate in qualifying events or invitationals to prepare for the opportunity to try to advance to the state festival or state championships,” Gardner said. “We’re very proud of our progress.” Practice makes perfect, and the band continues to practice as a unit once a week after school starts. Members practice individually as well. Since the band doesn’t travel to away football games, its best rehearsals come on those Friday nights when the Titans aren’t playing at home, and they can take advantage of real time practice on the field at the stadium.
