30 NOVEMBER 2018 By Jennifer Marshall Kraig Foote, owner of Art One Gallery, Inc., will be celebrating 25 years of helping students achieve their dream of becoming successful artists this month. Located in Old Town Scottsdale, the gallery has been displaying student artwork since 1993. “I started the gallery to help college students,” Foote said. One of Foote’s friends was an assistant professor at ASU teaching interior design. Many of the professor’s students were also artists, and when they came to the house on weekends for classes, they would often bring their art projects. Foote soon discovered that most of these students had never shown their work professionally in a gallery. He also understood that these students needed a guiding hand to find success in the art world. That’s when he decided to make it his mission to help college students succeed while growing their artistic talents into a viable profession. Foote developed his eye for art while working at the Arizona Design Center. There, he interacted with designers, architects and clients as he learned to appreciate art from those who admire, purchase and collect it. He soon realized, though, that high school art students often needed more guidance than their college counterparts. Students would come into the gallery without any understanding about how to promote and sell their art. “We teach them how to put portfolios together and to accept critiques,” Foote said. “So, when they go to college, they’re prepared.” Students must meet several requirements to show their work at Art One Gallery. First, they must be accompanied by either their teacher or a parent. Next, they must agree to having their work critiqued by the gallery, and finally, they must maintain a grade of B or better in all their classes. High school art students receive all proceeds from the sale of their artwork. Foote also accepts work from students at the Autism Academy and One Step Beyond. These students, too, retain all profits from selling their art. Art One Gallery welcomes students from all around the Valley, and its new charitable foundation for student artists. This foundation raises money and accepts donations to furnish students with free art supplies, tuition and studio space. “We’re here for the community,” Foote said. “To help the community grow by investing in their students.” The work shown at Art One Gallery isn’t limited to oil and watercolor paintings. It showcases many artistic mediums including ceramics, wood carvings, photography, furniture and glass sculpture. The gallery receives new pieces every day, and all its inventory is featured on its website allowing out-of-town collectors the ease of ordering online. Art One Gallery will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Thursday, November 8 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Attendees will be treated to homemade tacos, music and artists doing live demonstrations. This event is free and open to the public. You can also participate in the Scottsdale Art Walk every Thursday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. year-round. 31 NOVEMBER 2018 Keep on walking. Well, maybe keep on painting. That is the spirit at Scottsdale ArtWalk, a year-round weekly event every Thursday night—now 40 years in the making— that encourages people to explore the work of local artists by wandering through galleries along Main Street and Marshall Way. “It’s a fun way to get out,” said Kraig Foote, owner of Art One Gallery, which is about to celebrate its 25th anniversary and participates in ArtWalk each week. While Art One offers a variety of artistic creations, anyone attending the ArtWalk is sure to find a style of art that resonates with them — whether it’s cutting-edge contemporary or Southwest landscapes — with more than 28 galleries from which to choose. The event typically attracts between 200 and 400 people and includes everyone from avid art enthusiasts to tourists who have never stepped foot in a gallery. Also known as “America’s Original ArtWalk,” the event allows students who are busy during the day with school and extracurricular activities to immerse themselves into their local community and gather inspiration from the art to express their creativity and make their own work. “It gives the city a chance to engage with its younger people,” Foote said. “You want the kids to come down and see what is happening in their own neighborhood.” Eight times per year, the Scottsdale Gallery Association and the entire Arts District come together to present a specially-themed “Gold Palette ArtWalk” with features like live music and entertainment, special activities and seasonal refreshments. There are free trolley and horse-drawn carriage rides, and public and valet parking is available. The next Gold Palette theme is Contemporary Focus and begins at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 15. The weekly ArtWalk not only shows the strong sense of community in Scottsdale, but also shows that expressing innovation and imagination is key to a close-knit and thriving neighborhood. Dinner and the ArtWalk in Downtown Scottsdale makes a perfect date night. ArtWalk runs from 7 to 9 p.m every Thursday, except for Thanksgiving.
