26 NOVEMBER 2018 By Michelle Donati-Grayman The eighth annual Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships takes place November 10 and 11 at WestWorld of Scottsdale. The event features past acts, such as the Arizona Humane Society’s Canine Couture dog fashion show produced by Lugari Pet Salon and Fried & Fizzy, Arizona’s pop-up restaurant and food truck featuring fried chicken and champagne. But it is also adding several new elements, with the Phoenix Symphony, Phoenix Theatre and Phoenix Opera providing performances to the backdrop of the day’s polo matches. This entertainment is centered around six polo matches that take place over the two-day event. Nearly 40 of the top polo players from around the world will gather to compete and pay homage to the sport. This includes a first-time appearance by Ralph Lauren model and world- famous polo player Nacho Figueras. It also includes top female Arizona polo players such as Natalie Grancharov-Camacho, who has competed at the event every year since its inception. Arcadia News recently sat down with Grancharov-Camacho to learn more. Arcadia News: When did you start playing polo? Grancharov-Camacho: I grew up in Silicon Valley and didn’t have much exposure to horses, but I always loved them. In college, I discovered my university had a team. I checked it out and was hooked. I got a late start compared to those who play all their lives. AN: What’s the biggest misconception about the sport? Grancharov-Camacho: Most people living in or visiting Arizona don’t realize we have a polo team and that we host the largest annual polo event in the country. Events like the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships are changing that, and helping Arizonans connect with the sport. AN: What do you love most about polo? Grancharov-Camacho: I met my husband playing polo, and we share a love for horses and a love for polo as a hobby. Polo is generally coed which allows men and women to compete on an even playing field — there are few other sports that can boast that!
