52 JUNE 2018 By Rachael Bouley Arcadia High School’s Track & Field team wrapped up its strong season by sending 11 athletes to the State Championships. The girls team, led by juniors and seniors, built on an impressive season start with the encouragement of Coach Sam Fox. The squad secured a fourth place finish in the First Annual Arizona Relays, as well as fifth place at the Buckeye Lions Invitational and seventh at the Husky Invitational at Horizon High School. The boys team, with more freshmen and sophomores, got out to a solid start at the AZ Relays at Coronado High School on Feb. 24, taking seventh place out of 19 teams. The boys captured 16th place finishes at both Buckeye and Husky before securing ninth place at the Valley Classic and third at the Scottsdale District meet in April. Fox, along with boys head coach Carl Tichenor, recognized the potential in their up-and-coming athletes who improved as the season progressed. Although some of the runners missed the first few meets because of winter sports obligations, the teams grew increasingly competitive as they moved through the season and it showed in the standings. The Arcadia coaching staff, including Fox, Tichenor, Sarah Boustila and throwing coach Jan Ware, pushed their athletes to succeed on and off the track. “These boys and girls are pretty impressive and easy to coach, with good attitudes,” said Fox. The season shaped up to be a healthy competition between Arcadia, Chaparral and Saguaro high schools. The Titans had several “blue chippers” who placed in the top three in most events. They included Dominique Ballard, who went to state in the 100m sprint after breaking a 20-year school record earlier in the season. Long jumper Bryce Nixon also went to state, along with runners Nichole Kaiser, Bella DeFalco, Haley Denning, Brooke Bream, Rachel Noble and Jasmine Alyasiri. Jorden Okyere and Makiya Moore were two of the biggest success stories from Arcadia’s season. Both ranked in the top 10 in the state for discus. Their stellar performances led to automatic qualifications for state and an invitation to the prestigious Arcadia Invitational in California on April 7. There, they joined 7,500 of the top athletes from around the country. But even in that large crowd, the two Titans stood out. Okyere ended up with his personal record and a gold medal in his division with a discus throw of 171 feet, 4 inches. He went on to become district champion in shot put, discus and javelin. He ended his senior year on a high note, placing fourth in the state in discus. He will continue his throwing career at Grand Canyon University. Now in her tenth season coaching the throwing events at Arcadia, Jan Ware has maintained her ultimate goal of having an athlete break her school records, set 32 years ago. Her dream was realized when Moore threw the discus 130 feet, 2 inches at the district meet. “It was a huge highlight and accomplishment,” Ware said. “I was so excited that I was the coach to do that. There was a lot of crying and screaming in excitement.” Moore also won the state championship in discus, and she and Okyere received the most outstanding female and male awards at the school sports banquet. “Every time they do something so good, I can’t sleep at night.
