48 JUNE 2018 By Jennifer Marshall Keegan Twyerould, a student at Arcadia High School, finished the school year with quite an accomplishment. The junior recently won a gold medal for his pin design at the SkillsUSA Arizona State Championships. The SkillsUSA Championships are a prestigious series of competitive events which showcase the best career and technical education students in the nation. One of the competitions is the State Pin and State T-Shirt designs. Arcadia High School’s Graphic Design classes threw their hats in the ring, using the skills they’ve learned at school. Twyerould’s was picked as one of the top five out of peer review rankings. His design was then entered into the state championships where he was chosen as the Arizona champion. When asked about the win, Twyerould singled out one person in particular. “Ms. Cure makes it all happen,” said Twyerould. “Her influence and 30 years of teaching is making successful careers possible.” Ms. Dianna Cure is the Advertising Art and Graphic Design teacher at Arcadia High School. Her career in education started at Scottsdale High where she taught Advertising Art. And for the last 26 years, she’s been a faculty member at Arcadia High School. While the Advertising Art/Graphic Design program is open to freshman, the three levels are usually taken during the sophomore, junior and senior years. The program is rigorous, but also aims to be creative and rewarding. “The program is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in design,” said Cure. “It also strives to instill less tangible but equally vital career skills: ethics, collaboration, responsibility, leadership and communication.” While the classes in the Advertising Art/Graphic Design program are considered elective courses and fall under the CTE (Career and Technical Education) category, they’re also dual enrollment, meaning students who participate in the program can earn both high school and college credit. Cure has had past students graduate from graphic design programs at top- tier colleges and universities. Twyerould is just the latest student of Cure’s to participate at the SkillsUSA Competition. Under her tutelage, Scottsdale High School won a Silver Medal in Advertising Design. And in her 26 years of teaching at Arcadia, she has had students win gold, silver, and bronze medals at the State and National SkillsUSA Competitions. “Ms. Cure is the most amazing person,” said senior Gretchen Rae, who will be studying graphic design at Texas Christian University this fall. “She’s been a real mentor to me, she was really one of the biggest reasons why I started to believe I could do this for a career.” “I want to work really hard for my students and want them to do well,” said Cure. “I have great kids.” AHS teacher and student team up for design award Twyerould won gold at the SkillsUSA Arizona Championships for his winning pin design (left).
