44 JUNE 2018 By Jennifer Marshall This summer, you and your family could climb a mountain in an exotic land, explore an ancient, haunted castle or discover endangered wildlife in Africa, all without going to Sky Harbor and boarding a plane. How? Open a book and get swept away on new, grand adventures. Each year, we hear educational experts tout the importance of reading for kids. Why is it so important? The simple answer is it keeps children’s minds sharp during the summer months. It helps them develop their vocabulary, opening them up to discover the world around them. Children who read books on a regular basis become faster readers, which will help them when it comes to taking timed tests like the SAT. Reading is great for adults too! It can actually act as a stress reliever, and for older adults, some studies have shown that mental activities like reading help keep the brain sharp. We reached out to Ms. Kristl Chavez who is a Librarian and Web Content expert with the Phoenix Public Library. In the past, she’s also headed up summer reading programs at Saguaro Library. We asked her to select five adult books and five childrens books that would be perfect reads for summer. FOR ADULTS A House of My Own: Stories from My Life by Sandra Cisneros Fans and new readers of Cisneros alike will enjoy this collection of stories and poems that follows the author/poet around the world and from step to step through her journey as a writer. Sensuous in language and imagery, this book is especially recommended for readers who suffer from sweet, sweet wanderlust. A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Bachman Ahh… who doesn’t love a super surly curmudgeon? Ove just wants to be left alone once and for all, but the universe has other plans. With a cast of characters that is as animated as it is endearing, this book will make you feel all the feelings. Rules of Civility by Amor Towles It’s New Year’s Eve 1937 in Greenwich Village. Katey Kontent’s destiny is set in motion with a chance meeting. There’s New York high society, there’s jazz, there’s surrender. Towles’ rendering of this time in America is sparkling and deeply felt. A must for historical fiction lovers. The Crossroads of Should and Must: Find and Follow Your Passion by Elle Luna Half visual masterpiece, half self-help book, Luna takes her readers on a trip to heightened self-discovery where identifying and learning to follow one’s passion is the end game. Get ready to begin to let go of all that you were told that you “should” do and embrace your “musts.” Priestdaddy by Patricia Lockwood The freshest, most hilarious memoir I have read in a while. Lockwood describes coming of age in a house with a Catholic priest father (yes, it’s a thing… sometimes). Come for the plot, stay for Lockwood’s clever, descriptions of the everyday and the human condition. FOR CHILDREN Strictly No Elephants by Lisa Mantchev This picture book’s message of love and tolerance is disguised in a sweet, friendly story about a boy who, when faced with adversity, opens up his world and the world of his community. Day of the Dinosaurs by Stephen Brusatte Kids of all ages can immerse themselves into a jewel-colored dinosaur wonderland with this dynamic, fact-filled book that is perfect for sharing. El Deafo by Cece Bell In this graphic novel, Bell tackles the serious subject of growing up with hearing loss with charm and tenderness. A favorite among early readers, this book is witty and funny and includes Bell’s bold illustrations. Grand Canyon by Jason Chin With breathtaking visuals and an informative narrative, this book will inspire families to take the drive up to our state’s very own natural wonder. The Penderwicks: A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits and a Very Interesting Boy by Jeanne Birdsall The ultimate summer chapter book for middle grades. Its dreamy adventure scenes are dipped in mischief and warmth. This book would make for a great read-along title for parents and their kiddos.
