40 JUNE 2018 By Laura Cafiso While most of us are planning our summer getaway or packing the kids off for camp, other Phoenicians are figuring out how they and their families will have enough to eat over the long, hot summer. Every year on the second Sunday in May, the National Association of Letter Carriers holds its “Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.” The timing is important, with food banks, pantries and shelters running low on donations from the winter holidays, and with summer looming, when most school meal programs are suspended So along with setting up lemonade stands, watching summer movie blockbusters and hosting pool parties, add helping out our food banks to your summer activity list. Phoenix is home to the world’s first food bank alliance, St. Mary’s Food Bank. Founded in 1967 by John van Hengel, the bank just celebrated its 50th anniversary. It supplies food to over 400 nonprofit agencies in Arizona, said Jerry Brown, St. Mary’s Food Bank director of public relations. Donating food is what most of us think of as the best way to help local food banks increase their inventory. But donating money makes more of an impact. “If you go to the grocery store and you purchase a jar of peanut butter for us for $2.50, that will feed one family,” Brown said. “We can buy that peanut butter in much larger quantities and get the price of that peanut butter down to 80 to 90 cents, which means we can feed two and a half families, with the same amount of money.” In Arizona, one in seven people struggles with hunger. One in four children suffers from food insecurity or lack of consistent access to adequate and nutritional food. If you choose to donate nonperishable food items, donate items such as peanut butter; canned fruits, vegetables, tuna and chicken; and canned protein meals like Chef Boyardee. The best liquid donations are electrolyte replacement drinks, like Gatorade and of course, water, because of our extreme high temperatures. And take note: St. Mary’s Food boxes are conveniently located inside Goodwill stores throughout the Valley, so you can drop off donations there. Here’s another way to help out. When hosting that birthday pool party, make it a donation party. Ask guests to bring their favorite pasta and can of sauce or favorite peanut butter and crackers. Then take a field trip to St. Mary’s or another local food bank to donate. Volunteering at St. Mary’s counts as another avenue for helping out. From families to companies, all kinds of groups come to help pack food boxes at the bank’s 31st Avenue and Thomas Road location. Bringing canned goods to your volunteer opportunity doubles your good will as you add to the supply. “We’ll have the Fan Club from Metallica in here packing food. Next week we’re doing a cow-milking contest with the Arizona Diamondbacks,” Brown said. “We have Eagle Scouts that are doing water drives right now for us.” There’s truly no end to how you can help those most in need. This summer, make sure to have fun and offer a helping hand. For more: stampouthungerfooddrive.us or 602-343-3134. Helping food banks one donation at a time NEARBY FOOD BANKS ST.
