For more than 43 years, a majority of Harkins Theatres have participated in a Summer Movie Fun prog ram, which allows kids of any age to see family-friendly movies once a week for 10 weeks at the price of only $7. During the school year, gathering the family to catch a movie can be a quite a challenge. But now that it’s summer, this prog ram allows children to see films that they may not have gotten the chance to see earlier in the year, or watch one of their old favorites. After purchasing the Summer Movie Fun pass at the box office and selecting a day to see the weekly movies, kids accompanied with a parent will have access to the theater at 9 a.m., which gives an ample amount of time to peruse the concession stand and find your seats before the movie starts at 9:45 a.m. All snacks will be at available and kids have the option to order the Harkins Kids’ Combo for $5.50, which includes a small popcorn, fruit snack and a small drink all placed in a carrying tray. Sit back and utilize Arizona’s most prized possession during the summer, air conditioning—while not having to worry about the constant reapplication of sunscreen in the blazing heat. By Rachael Bouley A long-time Arcadia resident is taking steps to improve not only his own health, but also the well-being of others. Kevin Riley has lived in Arcadia for more than 48 years. Whether he’s participating in the annual Fourth of July Parade, or helping with his class reunions, his goal is to pay it forward and be active in his community. Now, as he approaches his 60th birthday next March, he has his sights set on another mission: to lower his cholesterol level while raising money for a local non-profit. Riley is pounding the pavement, walking for miles every day as part of his fundraiser dubbed “March to 60.” What started as a plan to improve his physical fitness and health has blossomed into a full-on community campaign, benefitting Tremble Clefs, a musical therapy choir for those affected by Parkinson’s disease. The non-profit, which started in 1994, was a big part of life for Riley’s parents, who began attending the program in 2001 and kept going until his father’s death in November 2008. “I needed a way to lower my cholesterol and get in better shape, and the Tremble Clefs needed to raise funds,” Riley said. “I took control of my own destiny. I came up with a plan that would help both myself and the group.” He began by walking five or six miles a day, and it wasn’t long before he realized the potential for securing donation pledges. In March of this year, he warmed up by logging 162.82 miles, and by the end of April, he had raised an impressive $1,113 by putting in 203 more miles. He hopes to build on that fundraising success in the coming months. Supporters can make a flat donation or pledge a certain amount for every mile he walks for a specified length of time. “The more donations I get, the more I’m motivated to walk,” he said. After his father’s passing, Riley wanted to keep his mother involved in the group, so he tagged along for moral support. It wasn’t long before he was persuaded to perform a song in front of the eager listeners, despite his fears. “I was scared stiff, legs shaking and everything,” he said. “I decided to sing ‘Danny Boy’, which was my dad’s favorite song.” Fast forward ten years, and Riley is much more confident and comfortable with his musical abilities, especially in front of an audience. That’s what he loves about Tremble Clefs — the combination of vocal and physical exercise with the chance to learn and grow in a shared, supportive social setting. No singing experience is necessary, and participation is open to Parkinson’s patients, their families and caregivers. “My fears gradually disappeared. For the patients, it’s voice therapy; for me it’s a confidence builder,” Riley said. “I’ve also seen how music therapy can strengthen and improve a patient’s voice. One of our members stutters, but when he sings, you can understand him perfectly. It’s given him confidence to interact socially.” “Since we are a full non-profit organization, there is always a need for funds,” said Tremble Clefs member Robert Faulkner. “Kevin is a great friend and I respect and appreciate all that he does.” At the end of the day, Riley and his supporters are helping to brighten the lives of those in need of a little more sunshine. “When you walk into Tremble Clefs, you feel instantly welcomed by everyone,” Faulkner added.
