28 JUNE 2018 By Megan Forrester Surfing in Arizona may sound strange to some people, but that is one example of the unique activities offered at six local resorts to help kids have the ultimate staycation this summer! These resorts—The Phoenician, The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, The Arizona Biltmore, The Pointe Hilton at Squaw Peak, The Westin Kierland and The Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North—all accommodate your child’s dream activities. UNDER THE SEA Do you sometimes wonder if your child is part fish? If the answer is yes, then there are many activities at Valley resorts that gear towards chlorine-lovers, such as Dive-In Movies, which are held regularly at The Phoenician, The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, as well as The Arizona Biltmore. The events allow kids to float, alongside colorful noodles, while watching aquatic films such as Finding Nem o and The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie . Also, pack your conch shell and join The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess for its Mermaid University, where kids ages two through 12 can become certified mermaids and take home their very own Monofin Mermaid Tail. HEADING TO CAMP School may be out, but it’s always a good time for your kids to meet some new people. Five of the resorts provide full and half-day camp sessions that include activities such as pottery painting, teepee building and outdoor bowling. This summer, your child could become a part of The Phoenician’s Funicians, The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess’ Poolside Funergy Team, The Pointe Hilton’s Coyote Camp, The Westin Kierland’s Camp Kierland, or The Four Seasons Scottsdale’s Kids for All Seasons Camp and make memories with new buddies. DAREDEVILS If thrill-seeking is the motto for your kids, they will feel right at home at some of the resorts. Whether it’s The Arizona Biltmore’s 92-foot-long waterslide or The Westin Kierland’s Surf Camp—which utilizes a FlowRider wave simulator—any adrenaline junkie will have a blast. On the opposite end of the spectrum, if your child wants to decompress after a stressful year of school, they can find relaxation at The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess’ plethora of pools (six in total), drifting along the 900-foot-long lazy river at The Westin Kierland, or even playing a few rounds of mini golf at The Pointe Hilton at Squaw Peak’s 18-hole course. DELICIOUS DESSERT Lastly, what would any summer be without the sweet treats? Your kids can enjoy anything from Cactus Kid Snow Cones at The Arizona Biltmore to popsicles at The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. Also, if you want to capture the perfect snapshot of the youngsters indulging in their confections, consult the Instagram Concierge at The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, who will show you the most photogenic spots on the property as well as handpicked photography app recommendations in order to take home the best souvenir of all—photos documenting all the great memories your kids made this summer. 29 JUNE 2018 By Elaina Verhoff Father’s Day is Sunday, June 17! Make this Father’s Day special by planning a shared experience for dad and the kids. Here are a few fun ways to make memories on dad’s big day. ENJOY A STAYCATION Take advantage of one of the many deals offered by local resorts this time of year and enjoy a family staycation. Indulge in poolside smoothies, order room service, crank up the A/C and watch a movie, and enjoy having someone wait on you and clean up your messes (yes, moms, we’re talking to you too!) Tip: The piña coladas, lazy river and dive-in movies at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge are hard to beat. VOLUNTEER Go for a “helper’s high” by pitching in and volunteering at one of the many amazing nonprofits doing great things around the Valley. St. Mary’s Food Bank, St. Vincent de Paul, Feed My Starving Children and Welcome to America Project all welcome adult and child volunteers for various projects. Contact organizations directly to find out their schedules and volunteer needs. DINE WITH THE ANIMALS Treat dad to a hearty mouthwatering breakfast buffet inside the Phoenix Zoo’s beautiful Stonehouse Pavilion. This special Father’s Day Breakfast (only available to members) will include exclusive meet and greets with some of the Zoo’s animal ambassadors and a cider toast to dad. Breakfast times are from 9 to 10 a.m. or 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $18 for adults, $14 for children ages 3 to 13 and free for ages 2 and younger. Tickets available at phoenixzoo.org. HAVE A MUSICAL LUNCH AT ORGAN STOP PIZZA If the last time you went to Organ Stop Pizza was your sixth-grade field trip, it’s time to introduce the kids to a Valley classic. This year’s Father’s Day Musical Lunch at Organ Stop Pizza will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will include an all-you- can-eat pizza buffet and salad plus unlimited soft drinks. And presumably, plenty of organ music. It’s well worth the drive to 1149 E. Southern Ave. in Mesa. Tickets available online (advance purchase required) at organstoppizza.com. $12 for adults and $10 for kids ages 3 to 9. MAKE ART When was the last time dad strapped on an apron and got messy with the kids? Make a reservation for pottery painting at As You Wish, or try Pinspiration’s crafty Father’s Day cookie workshop with Layla Bean Cakery. This themed cookie-making experience includes a pizza pie of cookies, and all of the instruction to decorate, to take home and share with friends or family. Not only will you enjoy the experience, but you’ll walk away with a memento of the day’s activity. For more: pinspiration.com/classes.
