24 JUNE 2018 4. The Revenant (2015) Leonardo DiCaprio finally won his Oscar for the lead role in this film. Set in the North American frontier of 1823, a fur trapper must survive a revenge-fueled journey across the frozen landscape. It’s grisly (no pun intended) and fraught with tension, but could also help you forget that you could fry an egg on the pavement outside your Arizona home. 3. The Thing (1982) An arctic wasteland where a group of men scramble to figure out which one of them is actually an alien shapeshifter. The Thing is solid B-Movie style horror with gross-out practical effects and razor-sharp tension. The tone and mood alone will give you a chill, even if the icy landscape doesn’t. REEL TALK By Eric Luse One of the first things I slip into conversation when I meet someone who has just moved to Phoenix is “I apologize in advance for the summer heat.” We Arizonans wear our ability to withstand hot weather like a badge of honor, and most of the time reserve the right to roll our eyes at any one that quips “But it’s a dry heat!” Summers tend to feel like Arizona was left in the oven, and the universe walked out of the kitchen until September. Here are some movies to hopefully trick your brain into thinking it’s colder than it actually is. Grab a tall glass of ice water and find these gems on your home- streaming services. 7. Frozen (2013) Wait, WAIT! Don’t stop reading now. Admit it, even if it means hearing “Let it Go” over and over, there’s few places better to escape the heat than in the magical kingdom of Arendelle. It’s so cold in that movie that Olaf the talking snowman sings an entire song about wishing it was summer. 6. The Day After Tomorrow (2004) This global disaster film is goofy, melodramatic, and all sorts of popcorn fun. It also features New York City getting frozen over by a freak blizzard. This occurs after the tsunami, of course. A young Jake Gyllenhaal and Emmy Rossum star. 5. Cool Runnings (1993) The late John Candy recruits a team of Jamaican athletes to form a bobsled team for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. It’s basic heartwarming Disney stuff which might be perfect for a summer afternoon. This is essential 90s kid viewing. 2. Fargo (1996) Scraping ice off windshields and driving through iced roadways are definitely not the problems of a Phoenix summer, but consider the Coen Brothers 1995 noir black comedy for a taste of Minnesota / North Dakota life. You betcha! 1. March of the Penguins (2005) This Academy Award winning documentary is enveloping and charming, as it chronicles the birth and life cycle of emperor penguins in Antarctica. Let Morgan Freeman’s narration transport you to the tundra of the Antarctic and allow you to forget how hot the car is each time you get in it. — Eric Luse was born in Boston and raised in Arizona. He has worked as a screenwriter, casting director, producer and actor in the independent film industry. He is the proud instructor of the Arcadia High School Film and TV program.
