48 MAY 2018 By Max Bechtoldt Each spring, high school athletes across the country take part in Signing Day. On this day, all the hard work for these seniors pays off as they sign their letter of intent to play their sport for a college or university. This year at Arcadia High School, the Signing Day festivities were in full swing on April 9 , as seven athletes signed to continue their athletic careers at the next level. These seven Titans joined the nine who signed in the fall. For high school athletes, often the ultimate goal is to continue playing through college. But many do not get the chance, something that Cher Fesenmaier, Arcadia’s athletic director, makes sure the students know. “I remind student-athletes all the time that statistically, less than two percent of all high school athletes go on to play their sport at the college level,” Fesenmaier said. “I feel very fortunate to be surrounded by a lot of great students.” The athletes who signed on April 9 come from a variety of sports, showing the strength of Arcadia’s athletic program as a whole. • Jade Smith will continue her volleyball career at Glendale Community College. • Kalena Teufel, will play soccer at the University of San Francisco. • Dominique Ballard will play soccer at Arizona State. • Jillian Rasmussen will continue her education and tennis career at Seattle University. • Taylor Houser will go on to study and play basketball at Eastern Arizona College. • Dylan Watkiss, will play basketball at St. Lawrence University in upstate New York. • Aidan Weber will continue a family legacy and play basketball at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. “Just being celebrated for all of the hard work you’ve put in with academics and athletics, it’s just very exciting” Watkiss said. “My uncle went to Wartburg and he set the record for rebounds in a single game” Weber said. “And I told my parents that I want to go to Wartburg and try to break that record, so that’s always been kind of a goal of mine.” Arcadia’s 16 total signees between fall and spring is two more than signed last year and is a very strong number for a school of Arcadia’s size. “The fact that we have had 14 students in the 2016-2017 school year and 16 students in the 2017-2018 school year has been a blessing and true honor that our students are getting recognized for their hard work,” said Fesenmaier.
