50 APRIL 2018 St. Theresa ends remarkable basketball season with state title By Kaylee Sumpter The 2017-2018 basketball season was one of the most successful seasons that St. Theresa Catholic School has ever seen, with the eighth grade boys team taking home the Arizona State Middle School Championship. Jeff Huber, St. Theresa’s athletic director, began the season with one major goal – to win the Catholic Youth Athletic Association (CYAA) title which eluded the squad previously. “Last year, we finished third in the CYAA tournament,” said Huber. “We felt we had underperformed, and this year we wanted to focus on winning the CYAA tournament. And it spun into us winning state.” As a new addition to St. Theresa’s team this season, head coach Dante Medder had a big impact on the team’s success. “Coach Medder was a critical part in the team’s improvement this season,” said Huber. “He was a club coach who was new to the school and was definitely a major key in getting the team to improve.” During the season, the team also won three other tournaments, before winning the CYAA and making it into the state playoffs. The Broncos played the Mohave Patriots, Ingleside Trojans, and the Dietz Dragons. The Ingleside game in particular was a memorable one. The schools are less than a mile apart and many of the St. Theresa kids knew their opponents well, having played with them on club teams in various sports. Many of the players will be teammates in the future at Arcadia High School. The game was close, but St. Theresa ended up pulling off the 42-34 win. In the championship game, the boys played the Benson Bobcats and dominated with a 20-point win, with a score off 55-35. Brandon Austin was the high scorer with 18 points, including five 3-pointers. “Besides winning, I am proud of the team’s ability to overcome ourselves,” said Huber. “In the beginning of the season, there were some issues where the boys were self- destructing, and the team was able to overcome that at the most adverse times. When they needed to come together they were able to do it.” The Broncos’ hard work paid off this season, and the coaches and parents hope that all the effort put into this season will be a motivator for the boys in future sports. “Basically, our approach was to give them every opportunity to play at the next level,” said Huber. “We wanted to give them the skills to play when they get to high school.” (left to right, front): Cameron Kaye, Jack Speakerman, Tucker Wilburn, Holden Huber, Luke Dorris. By Mallory Gleich A group of young basketball players from the Arcadia neighborhood have much to celebrate after winning the state championship in March. The Arcadia Fire Basketball team is a group of 5 th grade boys, a majority of which attend Hopi Elementary School. On March 4, they headed to Tucson to compete against teams from all over the state, including Phoenix, Yuma and Tucson. The basketball team was created a year ago by friends Jimmy Fox, Robert Koehler and Chris White. Since all of their sons enjoyed playing basketball, the dads decided to start a team for their boys and their friends. “Robert and I love basketball and love coaching our sons and their friends. It’s an awesome group of kids that get along and play so well with one another,” Jimmy said. Jimmy grew up in the Arcadia area and attended Hopi, Ingleside and Arcadia. His father, former NBA player Jim Fox Sr., might have had a little something to do with his love for the game. “I grew up playing hoops and still absolutely love it! I played at Arcadia High and in college,” Jimmy said. The Arcadia Fire complete roster contains nine boys, including Jamison Fox, Xander Koehler, Braylen Rooney, Johnny McDade, Jack Igo, Dillon Achen, Nick Gentner, Dutch Van Es and Rocco Mortensen. The boys started practicing for the tournament back in August. They played the fall season with the Boys and Girls Club and a greater Phoenix league in the winter. In all, the boys played 25 games leading up to the state tournament. The team qualified for the state tournament by being runners up in the Boys and Girls club league. They played the state tournament at the school division level and won all five games they played, the last one in overtime. Jimmy’s advice for kids who want to start playing basketball is simple: put down the video games and head outside. “Robert and I love watching the kids have fun and continue to improve their game just by playing,” Jimmy said. Johnjay Van Es, whose son Dutch plays on the team, said the boys received their jerseys the night before the state championship, and the new look took them to the next level and made the game even more exciting. “A successful team is a group of many hands and one mind, or in this case two minds,” Johnjay said of the coaches. “Coaches Jimmy and Robert know that it’s not about winning, it’s how you play the game. Did the kids have fun and did they leave their hearts and souls on the court?” So how did the team celebrate its win? “We did nothing. The boys were so exhausted we just drove back to Phoenix!” Jimmy said. Arcadia Fire are state champs By Max Bechtoldt Arcadia baseball coach Troy Gerlach describes senior Clay Wasson as quiet, laid back, funny and sarcastic. Although the senior outfielder’s game isn’t all about laughs. In the same breath, his coach also describes him as a leader both on and off the field. Wasson, a four-year varsity outfielder for the Arcadia Titans baseball team, first found his love of baseball from his father. “My dad has been my teacher since I was a kid,” Wasson said. “He loved it as a kid, so I decided that I wanted to play it too.” Wasson has started games on varsity from the beginning of high school, proving himself as a strong fielder with a powerful arm. But throughout his first two seasons he struggled mightily at the plate, posting sub-.200 batting averages both seasons. During that time, he also played basketball, appearing on the Titans varsity squad as a sophomore, before deciding to focus on baseball. Gerlach says Wasson’s mental strength and work ethic has helped him to develop into one of the strongest bats in the Titans’ lineup. “He’s so tough mentally that he was able to overcome his struggles offensively. You would never know when he stepped up if he was hitting .100 or .300,” Gerlach said. “And he’s always been strong defensively and that has continued.” The hard work paid off for Wasson in his junior year, as he improved to hitting .389, good enough to be second best on the team that season and to be the top returning player in that category. He was also selected to the second team all-city in 2017. But for him it isn’t just about on-the-field production, it’s about being a role model for the younger guys. “I’ve grown a lot, freshman and sophomore year were about learning from the older kids, and now I’m one of the older ones so I get to be that guy for the younger kids,” Wasson said. “These guys are going to be studs.” Going into his senior season, Wasson carries a quiet confidence about himself. But Gerlach knows that when it’s time to step up and be the leader, Wasson is always up for the job. “The other day our outfield coach was late getting here and Wasson took the outfielders and was putting them through drills,” Gerlach said. “Just being able to take guys to the side and talk to them about certain situations is really important because he’s been there – he’s struggled too.” Wasson has received multiple offers to play baseball in college but has not committed to any schools yet. He is hoping a strong senior season will open up more opportunities to continue his baseball career.
