46 APRIL 2018 By Michelle Donati-Grayman When it opened late last year, The Phoenician’s Mowry & Cotton, a laid-back restaurant tucked inside the AAA Five Diamond resort, quickly became a local draw. The establishment’s name is a tribute to George E. Mowry and James M. Cotton, Arizona businessmen who built a high-end establishment in downtown Phoenix in the late 19th century. The building was avant- garde for its time, with glass doors and windows that captured the area’s natural light, and a colorful sidewalk that was created by sinking empty beer bottles upside-down into the dirt. Mowry & Cotton serves in that same spirit. It has an atmosphere that’s approachable and fun, with floor-to-ceiling windows, walls of growlers and an inviting porch that also makes the most of the area’s natural light. “The restaurant is a key component of the resort’s overall transformation, which has incorporated nearly every area of our property, from accommodations and dining to pools, spa and golf,” said Denise Seomin, director of public relations and marketing communications for The Phoenician. “The end result is a new style of luxury that is more contemporary and relaxed.” Dinner at the restaurant debuted in October 2017 and its weekend brunch, which features fro-mosas and Mowry Monkey Bread, opened to fanfare a month later. “Mowry & Cotton has been very well received by the community,” Seomin said. “Guests enjoy and appreciate the straightforward, f lame-cured Modern American dishes created by Chef Tandy Peterson, which have a story of their own.” In February, the restaurant launched a social dining experience called “Meet at Mowry.” Its premiere event, a wine and dinner feast featuring Gary Farrell Vineyards and Winery, sold out. “Meet at Mowry offers an engaging and diverse lineup of monthly events, providing local residents with the opportunity to mix, mingle and discover,” Seomin said. Monthly experiences range from communal wine parties to large, seasonal events, including a BBQ, Bourbon & Beer Feast in April and a Kentucky Derby Party in May. A portion of the proceeds from the Kentucky Derby Party will benefit After the Homestretch-Arizona, a nonprofit that finds forever homes for retired race horses. All events share a community emphasis, giving guests the chance to eat and drink their way through the experience alongside others. Seats for the Saturday, April 21 BBQ, Bourbon & Beer Feast are available for $70 per person (plus tax and gratuity). The event will take place from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the restaurant’s porch, which features an extensive misting system. The menu includes a variety of all-you-can-eat BBQ food stations and six samplings from distilleries such as Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve and Basil Hayden, as well as local breweries Four Peaks, Huss and Phoenix Ale Brewery – all included in the ticket price. Lawn games and raffle prizes will also be part of the festivities. The dress code is casual, and valet parking is complimentary. “With a social, communal focus at the core of its experience, Mowry & Cotton is uniquely designed to host such a series – from both its sense of place and its simple but bold cuisine,” Seomin said. Eat, drink and “Meet at Mowry”: a new social dining concept By Rachael Bouley One of the Valley’s most popular and prestigious resorts has a whole new look. Locals and visitors alike can look forward to a more contemporary and relaxed, yet still luxurious, vibe at The Phoenician. For nearly 30 years, the AAA Five Diamond resort has hosted some of the most extravagant celebrations and elite guests. At the same time, it has been a hotspot for staycations where family and friends can get a break from normal life and spend some quality time at a nearby getaway. Now, three years of renovations are nearly complete and a long list of upgrades aims to make guests feel even more at home. The project was the largest in the resort’s history. Denise Seomin, director of public relations and marketing communications for The Phoenician, describes it as a true transformation with a variety of enhanced and new offerings. The redesign has touched everything from guest rooms to restaurants and even the golf course, all as part of a massive move toward a more inviting, comfortable luxury. “It’s still five diamond luxury, but it’s done in a way that’s much more contemporary to meet the needs of today’s traveler,” Seomin said. Starting back in 2016, all of the accommodations were updated, along with suites and pool cabanas. The next year, crews focused their attention on public areas, including the main lobby and retail shops, as well as the Afternoon Tea Room and Thirsty Camel Lounge. Guests can now take advantage of expanded pool deck space, with special sections for families, adults and reservations only. The Phoenician added to the existing splash pad with a new children’s water slide and treehouse, and welcomed a new poolside restaurant called Kalio Kabobery. This casual, outdoor eatery serves Mediterranean-inspired cuisine and refreshing drinks. Other new dining options include Mowry and Cotton, a laid-back eatery with flame-cured cuisine, and The Marketplace, a Euro-style cafe for quick grab- and-go breakfast and lunch items along with signature pastries. Another recent addition is the new Phoenician Spa, a three-story facility with a rooftop pool, aromatherapy bar, dry bar for blowouts and a couple’s suite. This month, the two-story athletic club will open, boasting seven tennis courts, two pickleball courts and a basketball court on the lower level. Families can make memories in the activity center, equipped with a mini theater, arcade area, TV gaming zone and board games. Guests can stay healthy and keep up with their exercise goals at the 4,600-square-foot fitness center, featuring Matrix workout equipment and stunning floor-to-ceiling views of Camelback Mountain. The final piece of the massive project is set to debut in November. The redesigned Phoenician Golf Course will complete the resort and offer gorgeous views of the Valley below and the shades of the Sonoran Desert that inspired the new theme. Although the work has taken time, The Phoenician team is proud of how smooth the process has been and how it was able to remain open throughout the duration of the project. The staff took steps to make up for any slight inconveniences while maintaining their tradition of superb service. With summer fast approaching, The Phoenician has organized several deals for staycations and visits to the spa and restaurants. The starting rate for rooms from May 29 through August 31 is $169 per night. Visit thephoenician.com for more details. Phoenician putting final touches on three-year remodel The Phoenician’s remodel has taken nearly three years to complete and is intended to offer a more contemporary and relaxed, yet still luxurious vibe, at the Five Diamond resort.
