Explore an entire building full of interactive science exhibits, including an IMAX theater and a trip to the stars in the planetarium. Permanent exhibits include the American Airlines Flight Zone, where guests can experience the science behind flying, and Get Charged Up, an exhibit where kids can get hands-on with science. For more: azscience.org. _____________________________________ CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN Echo Canyon Recreation Center: 4925 E. McDonald Dr., Phoenix Cholla Trail: 6131 E. Cholla Ln., Phoenix Admission: Free. A hike up Camelback Mountain may be the kind of outdoor adventure you’ve been looking for. The trails are open from sunrise to sunset, but we’d recommend getting there early in the summer time. It can be dangerous in the mid-day heat. Bobby’s Rock Trail is perfect for a nice stroll up the mountain, while more difficult paths can be found on the Echo Canyon Summit and Cholla Trails. Dogs are not allowed on the trails. This children’s museum contains over 20,000 feet of engaging interactive space, including ArtVille, a larger-than- life art town designed to help children develop their artistic side. Upcoming exhibits include Caped Crusaders and Everyday Heroes, and My Favorite Monster. For more: ideamuseum.org. CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF PHOENIX 215 N. 7 th St., Phoenix Admission: $11 per person, 62 years and older $10. Free for members and children under the age of 1. This museum focuses on learning through play, with emphasis on early childhood education and school-readiness. The museum has 48,000 square-feet of hands- on, interactive exhibits designed for kids ten and under. For more: childrensmuseumofphoenix.org. __________________________________ PHOENIX ZOO 455 N. Galvin Pkwy., Phoenix Admission: $24.95 for adults, $14.95 for children. Free for children ages 2 and under. A trip to the zoo is a classic summer activity for the whole family. The Phoenix Zoo is home to over 1,400 animals, including 30 species that are endangered or threatened. Some of the occupants you can run into include African Lions, Flamingos, Zebras, Giraffes, Warthogs, Coyotes, and several different kinds of monkeys. Van Buren St., Phoenix Admission: $7 for adults, $6 for adults over age 62, $5 for students 6-17, $2 for ages 3-5, free for children under 3. This museum has over 90 fully restored pieces of fire apparatus on display, dating from 1725 to 1969. There are multiple exhibits at the near acre facility, including a gallery dedicated to the history of wildland firefighting in the United States. For more: hallofflame.org. ARIZONA MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY 53 N. Macdonald, Mesa Admission: $12 for adults, $10 for adults over age 65, $7 for children 3-12. Children 2 and under are free. The Arizona Museum of Natural History is a great way to spend a summer afternoon. Spend time with dinosaurs in dinosaur hall, become an archeologist in the lab, and dig for gold and fossils. Exhibits teach visitors about what Arizona was like before humans, and how the ancient cultures of central Arizona lived. Thomas Road, Phoenix Admission: $6.50 for adults 13 and up, $5.50 for 12 and under. $4.50 for adults over 55 and students with an ID. Veterans and active members of the military skate for free. All skate rentals are $3.50. We all reach a breaking point in the summer, where we want to get as far away from the heat as possible. Cooling off happens instantly in AZ Ice Arcadia, where you can strap on your skates and fly around the ice. Public skating is always available, but you can also take lessons or join a youth hockey league. Harkins Summer Movie Fun lets kids 12 and under enjoy a movie a week for ten weeks, for less than $1 per film. You can buy single day tickets or season tickets. Adult tickets are the same price, but an adult and child have to go with each other to the movie. Head online to find out which local theaters are participating in Harkins Summer Movie Fun. The Musical Instrument Museum displays more than 6,500 instruments collected from around 200 of the world’s countries. Guests experience the instruments through audio and video technologies, allowing visitors to see, hear and observe the instruments being played. If you’re looking for a hands-on experience, guests can play instruments from all over the world in the Experience Gallery. Experience the ocean and all its incredible wildlife, right in the middle of the desert. OdySea Aquarium offers visitors a chance to see animals and check out different exhibits. Pinnacle Peak Road, Glendale Admission: $39.99 for weekday general admission, $42.99 on weekends. $29.99 for children under 42” on weekdays, $32.99 on weekends. General admission prices online are $31.99 on weekdays, $34.99 on weekends. This is the largest theme park in the state of Arizona. This family-friendly water park has more than 30 different attractions, including slides, lazy rivers, and different play areas. Next door to OdySea Aquarium is a chance to learn about the amazing life of butterflies. Visitors can get up close and personal with butterflies, but also with the reptiles and amphibians that coexist with them in the rainforest. Wash off the summer heat with the cool waters of Big Surf. The local water park offers visitors the chance to ride waves, slide down several types of thrilling slides, or just float down the lazy river. Cactus Road, Phoenix Paradise Valley Mall has teamed up with National Geographic Kids to bring you Nat Geo Kid’s Club! Taking place on the first Friday of each month at 11 a.m. in the Sears Court inside P.V. Mall, kids are invited to take place in different activities and games that focus on “discovery through play.” The theme can differ each month. Each theme will have games and activities garnered toward that topic. There is no age limit and it does not cost anything to participate. Test out your strength and endurance at AZ on the Rocks indoor rock climbing studio. Here, visitors will literally be climbing the walls.
