61 Arc A d A News MARCH 2018 By Rachael Bouley A series of season-ending injuries couldn’t stop the Arcadia boys soccer team from chasing a state championship. The close-knit Titans made the most of their season, despite several big injuries. In a season of ups and downs, the young men of the Arcadia High School soccer team have proven their resilience and ready-for- anything attitude. Led by head coach Hayden Klarfeld, the boys overcame their share of challenges this year to achieve an impressive 7-6-1 record, qualifying for the State Championship tournament for the third year in a row. Reaching the Sweet 16 was quite the accomplishment for the Titans, who faced injury and sickness in spades this season. A series of season-ending injuries, including senior Jacob Staudenmaier’s ACL tear on the first day of tryouts, threatened to derail its plans. But despite the big losses, the team buckled down and went after their goals. “Without a doubt we exceeded our expectations,” Klarfeld said. “Last year we got to the first round of the state tournament and we did the same this year, so everyone was happy. We stayed positive, we knew we were a good team and we believed in each other.” Although their season was cut short when they lost in the state playoffs to number two ranked Independence, the boys are proud of their season and what they managed to accomplish. “It was amazing and surprising to make it to state,” said Klarfeld. “But it was a real achievement and we celebrated it.” “Everyone has a really good relationship with each other,” said senior mid-fielder Jack Spier. “Not only do we care for each other on the field, but outside of soccer we are really great friends. It’s a good group of guys.” At 23, Klarfeld is only a few years older than some of his players, and he remembers being exactly where they are. He’s a former Titan himself. “I don’t tell them to do anything I can’t do myself. I’m out there running laps, I do 100 percent of everything with them,” he said. “I know I had a lot of coaches who were older than me and we never saw them running. It’s difficult to take instruction like that, so I’m trying to relate to them and physically show them how I want them to play.” “Coach Hayden acts like he’s one of us,” said Spier. “He’s so good at relating to us.” Spier, who was a team co-captain this year with fellow senior Sebastian Gutierrez, noted that the best experiences of his high school career were as a part of the team. “Our goal was to make playoffs and we reached it, so we had a really great year, even dealing with a lot of injuries,” Spier said. “It was really cool to see that we were still able to go far.” Reflecting on the memorable season, Spier says the team’s match against Glendale stands out. The Titans were down two goals before an amazing hat trick just before halftime started their comeback. Consistent positivity and solid communication made it all possible. “When we all have fun, we all play better,” Spier said. “That’s really apparent with all of our players and coaches.” Looking ahead to next year, the Titans will bid farewell to nine of their graduating seniors. They aim to have everyone on the roster eligible to play come game day.
