30 MARCH 2018 Arc A d A News By Elaina Verhoff Since November, over 4,000 neon bicycles have made an appearance on the streets of Scottsdale and throughout Arcadia. “Dockless” bike companies LimeBike, Spin, and Ofo provide riders with bicycles that can be unlocked with an app, paid for with a credit card and left pretty much anywhere, although the companies ask riders to leave them in safe spots that don’t impede pedestrians or obstruct traffic. The idea is extremely popular in other countries. However, while some have been using the bikes for the purpose of outings with friends, others have been leaving the bikes strewn about, with some even ending up in canals. The sight of bikes all over the area has produced strong reactions from the community, with many divided on whether the bikes are good or bad. We asked Arcadians to weigh in on these ride-share bikes, which don’t seem to be going away any time soon. But the private company needs to monitor them better. The way it is set up right now, it’s the responsibility of the public to inform them if their bike is left someplace. That’s like kids leaving their toys laying around and the parents having to pick up after them.” Dorcas Nelson “I LOVE THEM! I think it’s cool that people are actually out riding them and when I see them parked I just think it’s amazing that someone has cycled it from one point to another and helped someone out or given a person some exercise or a fun time. I don’t understand why people find them an eyesore in certain areas… I mean nine times out of ten, they are there because a kid from the neighborhood rode it from A to B and parked it in front of your home.“ Laura Stover “Love the concept and think they are like books. I want to pick up and read to find out the story of how they got there.” Scott Scharl “I like the general idea and have enjoyed using Limebike, but I do think the bright bikes are kinda ugly, especially in huge numbers parked together. Perhaps over time, as they get ridden, the bikes will spread out further and further, and we won’t notice them quite as much?“ John Teefy “Go to any bar in the area and you’ll see ten of them outside. That’s ten people not driving after drinking and ten people living healthier. No downside.” Erica LeBlang “I hate them and am close to starting to chuck them into the canal. I work in Old Town, there are hundreds littering every corner. They’re an infestation and sometimes left on private property, like right outside my office window, for days on end.” NEIGHBORS WEIGH IN These companies encourage people to contact them with issues, complaints and requests to move the bikes.
