24 MARCH 2018 ArcAd A News By Eric Luse The Oscars are my Super Bowl and annually I rejoice in diving into the politics of guessing which way the Academy will vote. Tune in at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on Sunday, March 4, on ABC. Best Picture Will Win: Historically, a best picture win is accompanied by at least a Best Director nomination. There’s strong buzz for Three Billboards but The Shape of Water could steal this one. Want to Win: Get Out seems to be that perfect middle ground that average moviegoers and snooty Oscar lovers like myself can appreciate. It’s poignant, purposeful and entertaining. Actor in Leading Role Will Win: This one belongs to Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour) . It’s a solid transformation performance and a quality legacy win for decades of great character actor work. Want to Win: I haven’t seen Denzel Washington’s performance ( Roman J. Israel, Esq.) , but out of the other nominees it seems Oldman is the most deserving choice. Actress in Leading Role Will Win: Saoirse Ronan ( Lady Bird) may upset on this one, but it’s Frances McDormand ( Three Billboards) that is leading this category. Want to Win: Ronan is my particular favorite this year for (Lady Bird) . Actor in a Supporting Role Will Win: Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards) has been gaining all the momentum. Want to Win: Rockwell has never been better than in Billboards , but I’m partial to Willem Dafoe in The Florida Project . Actress in a Supporting Role Will Win: Laurie Metcalf (Lady Bird) has been getting Oscar buzz all year, but Allison Janney (I, Tonya) seems to keep winning this award at other ceremonies. Janney it is. Want to Win: I really can’t decide if I want Janney to win it more or Metcalf. As you read this I’m changing my mind. Best Director Will Win: Guillermo Del Toro for Shape of Water seems to be the favorite, but the Academy could decide to hand it to Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) . She’d only be the second female director to win. Want to Win: It’s rare but I would be happy to see any one of these directors win. Adapted Screenplay Will Win: Call Me by Your Name seems to be in the lead here, especially after the WGA awards. Want to Win: Logan . Original Screenplay Will Win: Get Out Want to Win: Get Out or Lady Bird Best Editing Will Win: Dunkirk has the most momentum here. Want to Win: Baby Driver is a movie defined by its superior editing, I just wish the Academy saw that too. Best Cinematography Will Win: Blade Runner 2049 …. but Dunkirk could surprise here. I think Roger Deakins is LONG overdue for a win. Want to Win: Blade Runner 2049. Best Original Score Will Win: The Shape of Water is leading here but is it the best? Want to Win: Phantom Thread was superior work and Jonny Greenwood is deserving. Best Original Song Will Win: Remember Me - Coco . But the Greatest Showman could upset here. Want to Win: This is Me – The Greatest Showman . Best Animated Feature Will Win: Coco Want to Win: Coco. Or anything but Boss Baby ... — Eric Luse was born in Boston and raised in Arizona.
