22 MARCH 2018 ARCAD A NEWS By Mallory Gleich A few weeks ago, Emma Jazo decided she was ready to give back to her community. She thought for a while about what she could do and suddenly the idea came to her. She would donate to Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Emma, an eighth grader from Ingleside Middle School, wanted to do something special for the kids at Phoenix Children’s Hospital for Valentine’s Day. “I really like doing projects, so I decided to do something nice for others,” Emma said. Emma went to the principal at Ingleside and asked if she could put out a bin at school for kids to donate stuffed animals to PCH. She also passed out 200 fliers around her neighborhood, asking for people to donate at her home as well. “It was great seeing how well the neighborhood responded. People were excited to get to go shopping for toys to give out,” Emma’s mother, Isabelle, said. At the beginning of her Teddy Bear Drive, Emma, her classmates, and neighbors had collected around 50 stuffed animals, and she nearly reached her goal for Valentine’s Day with 85 animals to pass out to the kids at PCH. “When we heard that Emma had started a Teddy Bear Drive for our children and families, we were so excited,” said Jenni Rogers, a child life specialist at Phoenix Children’s. Rogers said stuffed animals are given out to children to celebrate holidays, birthdays and achievements in treatment. “With Emma’s donations, we were able to bring a special teddy bear, a little bit of comfort, and undoubtedly a big smile to many children during the Valentine’s holiday,” Rogers said. “We are so thankful and fortunate for Emma’s hard work and dedication to providing a special gift for our children and families.” Emma says this will be the first of many projects and donations that she has in mind. She wants to expand to toys and/or clothes and also to other seasonal projects. Since Phoenix Children’s Hospital is one of the most well-known, Emma wants to continue to donate there and then eventually to other places. “I’m very proud of how philanthropic Emma is. She’s always thinking of others. Her immediate reaction to Valentine’s Day was to do something for others,” said Isabelle. Because of the flu season and other risks, Emma was unable to pass out the teddy bears to the kids themselves, but she still felt a sense of pride and happiness when dropping them off at the hospital. “It felt great knowing that the kids were going to get a special treat on Valentine’s Day,” Emma said. “Even though I couldn’t drop them off myself, I still felt happy knowing they came from my Teddy Bear Drive.” Student starts Teddy Bear Drive for Phoenix Children’s Hospital Emma’s efforts resulted in 85 teddy bears being donated to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, which were given to the kids to celebrate holidays, birthdays and achievements in treatment.
