56 FEBRUARY 2018 Arc A d A News By Rachael Bouley The Varsity Girls Soccer Team at Veritas Prep Academy is stirring up something special. Its impressive 13-1 start has the players aiming for a playoff run. Playoffs and state championships are never far from the players’ minds, and they think they have the tools to get there—with unwavering positivity and relentless drive. Guided by coach Senko Redzic and assistant coach Laura Lee Birdwell, this year’s team is a dangerous combination of talented freshmen and seasoned veterans. After falling in the playoffs last year, the Falcons are fiercely determined to come back, bigger and better than ever. They’ve certainly accomplished that so far, with only a single loss all year. Although their record is impressive, Redzic tries to teach the team that it’s okay to lose, as long as the team learns from its mistakes. “If you are always positive and see the best in things, you can’t lose,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what the score is at the end of the game if you learn from those mistakes. You will leave that field with more than you carried on there.” Even if they fall behind on the scoreboard, the team makes it a principle to never speak negatively about each other or their competition. By focusing on themselves and what they can improve, the Falcons end up having fun and building their camaraderie. “Our faith is just ridiculous. We can be down many goals and come back,” Redzic said. “There’s no quitting, no pointing fingers—this is a close unit of sisters and people that love each other.” Despite their intense schedule— sometimes playing four games in one week—the Falcons remain committed to their end goals. Senior co-captain and center back Bailey Fisher says they put a lot of time and dedication into their team. “We always motivate each other and we have so much fun,” she said. “We’ve come a long way and we are a very close team. Nobody’s bad-mouthing one another, we are very close and connected and that’s how we are able to achieve.” “A team can be more than just some people you play with,” junior Aubrey Reay said. “It’s more like a sisterhood. We take everything seriously, but at practice we never fail to find something to laugh about. We keep it light so it’s not so much pressure for any one person.” The Falcons hope the regular season success can propel the team to a successful postseason run. One of the team’s not-so-secret weapons is co-captain Kylie Hall. The junior center forward managed 25 goals and 11 assists in the first nine games of the season. “There’s a ton of tough competition, but I feel like this is the greatest team Veritas has had,” said Hall. “I think we can do it if we all keep working together.” “We keep feeding the team chemistry with so much positivity. We love being around each other,” Redzic said. “Half the time, I’m watching from the sideline thinking this is a dream. These girls are some of the finest people you’ll meet.” Veritas girls aim for playoffs By Mallory Gleich As the Arcadia Boys Basketball Team finishes out its regular season, the team focuses its hopes on a deep run in the state tournament and the friendships players have developed along the way. Forward Luke Ashworth says the team’s ultimate goal is to make it all the way to the state championship at the end of February. But wins and losses aren’t the only things that matter. Ashworth and team Captain Alex Lozevski say their favorite part of playing is hanging out with friends and building relationships with everyone on the team. “Having fun with the guys and also the stuff we do outside of playing, like going to team meals, is part of what makes playing so fun,” Lozevski said. The boys spend around two hours every day practicing for their games. Along with their on the court duties, the team watches game film of opposing teams in order to study up on their upcoming opponents. “The hardest part is the daily grind,” Lozevski said. “Along with two-hour practices, you have to make sure to stay focused on the game.” Being a team captain means an additional set of responsibilities and Lozevski says the most important part of the position for him is holding everyone accountable on and off the court. “I want to make sure that my team is giving 110 percent all of the time,” Alex said. “Playing basketball is a lot of fun. You’ll make a lot of friends and stay in shape. You fall in love with the game.” Both players noted the ways that the team has improved during the course of the season, especially when it comes to toughness and focus on controlling the ball during games. The Titans have also gotten better at keeping their intensity up for the entire game, and not losing steam in the second half. “The strongest part of the team this season is our leadership and athletic ability. We make sure we play hard,” Lozevski said. Coach Stephen Danford, who has been the basketball coach at Arcadia for the past six years, feels like the team is rounding into form in time for the playoffs. “We are playing well so far this season, I am presently surprised at how well the team has come together after graduating five seniors last year,” Danford said. “We beat a couple really good teams at the [Christmas] tournament.” The boys placed third against McClintock during the Christmas tournament over winter break, finishing as the top 5A school in the tournament. The Titans will finish up the regular season with games at Campo Verde on February 2, and home against Chaparral on the February 6, before beginning their playoff drive.
