52 FEBRUARY 2018 Arc A d A News By Megan Forrester Imagine two hours of demanding practice at least twice a week throughout the entire year. That might not be a pleasant image in most minds, but for the girls on the Spiritline team at Ingleside Middle School, those two hours each week allow them to express their passion through a sport unlike any other. But this season, the team has raised the bar even higher in terms of caliber and endurance, said their coach, Laura Stiles. “I wanted to give them a little more experience to get them ready for high school,” Stiles says. “So, we hired a choreographer to give them a little more of a professional competition routine.” Not only did the team experience a routine featuring increased difficulty, but the girls also went to a summer camp in July that was hosted by UCA, the Universal Cheerleading Association, at the Ingleside campus. “They [UCA] came out and were able to give the girls a little more training than just what I was able to do,” Stiles says. While constant conditioning and repeating jumps and motions may become a bit mundane at times, Stiles makes sure to give the girls a chance to pipe in their own ideas when preparing for a routine. “I like to give them a little more of a creative edge so that our dance routines for half-time and assemblies have some free range,” Stiles says. “They can feel more pride in what they are doing and what they are putting on.” The hard work of the team this season was reflected by the girls’ ability to qualify for the National Competition, which is held annually in February at Walt Disney World in Orlando. Unfortunately the Ingleside team was not able to compete, but hopes to attend next year. Maddie McGrath (grade 7) and Noelya Lopez Contreras (grade 8) are members of Ingleside Spiritline and enjoy how the sport has helped them build up their self-assurance. “She [Stiles] has helped me with my confidence because I was really shy before I joined the team,” Noelya says. Putting all the competitions and practices aside, Stiles says their success comes down to the 22 girls on the team developing into strong women together. “All of their personalities have really melted together amazingly,” Stiles says. “They are so sweet and kind and it’s really fun to watch them learn not only the cheerleading skills but how to deal with other women.” This opportunity of being on the Spiritline allows these sixth through eighth graders the chance to get used to meeting new people as well as realizing how beneficial it can be to make connections with other women. “I like the practices because I get to hang out with my friends since I am on the same team as them,” says Maddie. “And I think that’s pretty cool.” Ingleside Middle School Spiritline team sets sights on Nationals This year’s Ingleside Middle School Spiritline team won the Desert Southwest Regional Division and qualified for the National Competition at Walt Disney World in Orlando.
