56 JANUARY 2018 Arc A d A News By Mallory Gleich High schooler Nathaniel Shepherd wanted to wrestle. There was just one problem: his school did not have a wrestling team. So, he decided to start one. With the help of his brother Gabriel and another friend, he took his proposal to the principal and the school district. After some discussion between parents and the school board, Shepherd was set with the challenge of finding kids who shared his passion and wanted to try out for the wrestling team. Around 30 students showed interest and Arcadia High School’s wrestling team was formed, its first in 25 years. The first order of business was to build a brand-new room where the team could practice. With the help of Waltz Construction, the team soon had its own space to hone its wrestling skills. The approximate total construction cost was more than $30,000 and the project took about three weeks. “We are excited to see wrestling return to Arcadia. We know that offering students another opportunity to excel outside the classroom will have lasting effects both for them personally and our school and community as a whole,” said Cher Fesenmaier, the athletic director at Arcadia. The Arcadia wrestling season runs from the end of October through the beginning of February. Coach Clifford Nafrada has been teaching biology at Arcadia High for five years and has been coaching wresting for nine years at a high school level. He also taught and coached at Coronado High. “Most of the kids on our team are starting their first year of wrestling. They are doing great and having a lot of fun,” Shepherd said. Generally, there are two ways to win a high school wrestling match. A competitor must either pin their opponent’s shoulders to the mat for two seconds or must score more points than their opponent during the match, if no pin is achieved. Matches are six minutes; three periods with two minutes for each. Wrestlers gain points by taking down their opponent, escaping their opponent or for reversing their positions. “During a match, you want to think about all of your set ups to take down your opponent and pin him,” said Shepherd, who was named team captain this season. Although Arcadia wrestling is still in its beginning stages, the staff and students are proud to have a wrestling team to call their own. “Adding a wrestling team at Arcadia this year creates new opportunities for students to learn, grow, and find a sense of belonging on campus,” said Principal Todd Stevens. “Having a wrestling team this year adds value to the students of Arcadia.
