48 JANUARY 2018 ARCAD A NEWS By Mallory Gleich “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” These words, originally said by Mahatma Gandhi, are words that Arcadia resident Chevy Humphrey sees every day when she arrives at the office. They remind her of the responsibility that comes with leadership. Humphrey has served as President and CEO of the Arizona Science Center since 2005. Originally from Houston, Humphrey moved to Arizona in 1995 with her daughter. The only Arizonan she knew at the time was her new boss. “My first job in Phoenix was as the development director at the Phoenix Symphony. Moving to Phoenix has been a great adventure,” Humphrey said. Humphrey earned her degree from Northeastern University in Marketing and Entrepreneurship. She moved to Phoenix and later became CEO at the Science Center. “I was very humbled to be chosen as CEO and also felt a heavy weight on my shoulders. It is a huge responsibility to lead an organization that serves the community,” Humphrey said. It was one of Humphrey’s life goals to become a CEO. She says she loves to mentor people and help them achieve their professional goals. “Every day is different at the Center and I love that about my job,” Humphrey said. The Center, which has been a memory maker for Phoenix families for decades, was started in 1980 as a pilot science center by the Junior League of Phoenix. In 1984, it was just a 10,000 square-foot space in the parking garage level of the downtown Phoenix Hyatt. In 1993, construction began on the current building in Heritage and Science Park, and it opened its doors in 1997. The building is a landmark by renowned architect Antoine Predock. It was designed to mimic the landscape of Arizona with its combination of ramps, hallways, galleries and terraces. The first year of operation saw more than 87,000 guests. Today, more than half a million people visit the center annually. Part of Humphrey’s work at the Center includes onsite touring and discussing the newest educational initiatives to help students in Arizona become more successful. She also travels internationally representing Arizona and the Science Center. Some of Hu mph rey’s ot her accomplishments include acceptance into the Inaugural Piper Fellowship Class of the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust and holding the chair of the Global Association of Science and Technology Centers from 2013-2015. Humphrey’s favorite part about working at the Center is the people inside and outside of the organization. She is proud to be fulfilling the mission of the Center and hopes that when people visit, their lives are impacted in a positive way. “I also love seeing the faces of the people who visit the Center and watching them have an ‘ah-ha’ moment where something about science starts to make sense,” Humphrey said. The mission of the Center is to “inspire, educate and engage curious minds through science.” There are eight permanent gallery spaces with more than 300 hands-on exhibits. There are also temporary exhibits that come several times a year. The most recent exhibit is Pompeii: The Exhibition, which examines life before and after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Guests are invited to learn about the times when Pompeii was a commercial port and a military and trading center. It will be open until May 28.
