40 JANUARY 2018 ARCAD A NEWS By Nick Smith There are several things that are immediately identified with the city of Phoenix: Heat. Mountains. Cactus. One thing that isn’t usually mentioned as a local staple is soul food. But believe it or not, there is a well- known soul food hotspot that has its roots right here in the Valley! Lo-Lo’s Chicken and Waffles was the brainchild of Larry “Lo-Lo” White, an Arizona native. White grew up in the business, helping out as a kid in his grandmother’s restaurant. He opened the first Lo-Lo’s in 2002. Lo-Lo’s now has five different locations around the Valley, including one at Sky Harbor. The Scottsdale location sits on Scottsdale Road, just right of the fork that turns into Drinkwater, after previously being located on the southeast corner of Scottsdale and Thomas Road. If you were familiar with the old location, one visit to the new spot tells the entire story. There seems to be roughly four times more space, with three different sections of tables surrounding a bar to the back of the restaurant. Lo-Lo’s food isn’t exactly a secret, and odds are that you may have to wait for a table before digging into the food. Although the food is the star of the show, it would be a real waste to visit Lo-Lo’s and not partake in some of their famous “Drank”. Served in mason jars, these cocktails are the definition of dangerously smooth, as it would be very easy to down several of these without even really thinking about it. The most famous selection is probably Lo-Lo’s Punch, which has red berry vodka mixed with red Kool-Aid and pineapple juice. But there’s a chance it might be outclassed by the Purplesaurus Rex and its combination of gin, grape Kool-Aid and lemonade. What almost everyone comes to Lo-Lo’s for is in the name: the chicken and waffles. There are several different combinations, but if your mouth is truly watering, the Lo-Lo’s is the way to go. This option will get you three pieces of southern style chicken, with two golden waffles, each around the size of your face. The crispy chicken is seasoned with spices to begin with, but the way to take it up a notch is by dousing the three pieces with Lo-Lo’s secret hot sauce. It’s no joke, your mouth will feel the heat, but the syrup from the waffles works as the perfect pairing. The teasers work as shared plates for the table, with the fried green tomatoes being a particular standout. Green beans may not be a favorite for some, but Lo- Lo’s version may change minds. They are, of course, fried. The rest of the menu is a seemingly endless list of entrees, salads, desserts, and even all-day-breakfast. Whatever direction you decide to go, Lo-Lo’s is worth the wait.
