52 DECEMBER 2017 ARCAD A NEWS By Rachael Bouley An upcoming fundraiser aims to bring the community together in support of treatments and cures for devastating childhood diseases. The 2nd annual PANDA PROWL is set for Saturday, Dec. 17. This 5K Fun Run/Walk is presented by the Phoenix Women’s Board of the Steele Children’s Research Center at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. Better known as PANDA (People Acting Now Discover Answers), this fundraising board encourages the local community to get involved and make a difference by supporting crucial pediatric medical research. Known for its Children Helping Children Fashion Show & Luncheon and other fundraising initiatives, PANDA encourages participants of all ages to come join in the festivities along the Arizona Canal in Arcadia. PANDA PROWL offers fun for the entire family, including face painting, music and treats. Local vendors and businesses will also be on hand, and Starbucks and Smoothie King will donate coffee and smoothies for runners. “It is a chance for people to come out with kids of all ages, dogs, neig hb or s , c o - workers, friends and family to enjoy a wonderful afternoon walking or running the canal to support an organization that is fiercely dedicated to helping sustain the Steele Children’s Research Center,” said Jacque Linaman, PANDA board president. “It is a way to truly give back during the holidays and to feel good that your support is going to an organization that cares about our children and will continue fighting to provide them with the best care in the world.” This year, PANDA is raising awareness and funds for its Children’s Epilepsy Project, which will support research and new treatment for children with epilepsy. In the past 19 years, PANDA has raised more than $9 million in the fight against devastating childhood diseases, helping to fund treatment for more than 100,000 children. Linaman says there was an amazing turn out for the inaugural event, and PANDA is hoping for even better attendance this time around as the group shares the story of how treatment and research can change a sick child’s life. “We are hoping that people will walk away understanding a little more about our ‘Jewel in the Desert’ (the Steele Center) and how it can be an amazing resource to someone they know dealing with a sick child,” Linaman said “It allows us to help our own in this community and build lasting support for a facility that is engaged in research that ultimately touches the lives of children everywhere.” Registration will begin at 2 p.m. at Arcadia Park.
