PROPERTY The Gay family of LaGrangeville, NY, light display spans two acres and takes roughly two months to build, is set to more than 200 songs, including top-40 hits and holiday favorites. Edward H. Johnson put the very first string of electric Christmas tree lights together in 1882. Johnson, Edison’s friend and partner in the Edison’s Illumination Company, hand-wired 80 red, white and blue light bulbs and wound them around his Christmas tree. Bright lights strung on American trees, rooftops and lawns account for 6.63 billion kilowatt hours of electricity consumption every year. That’s more than the national electricity consumption of El Salvador, Ethiopia and Tanzania and enough power to run 14 million refrigerators. DID YOU KNOW? TREE Guinness World Records confirmed that Australian David Richards broke the record for the most lights on an artificial tree with his latest holiday lights project.
