Aside from the new crop of movies, sometimes it’s best to revisit movies your children may have been too young to see in theaters. It’s a great way for the whole family to bond while the kids are out of school for two weeks and you just need to get out of the house or escape the jam-packed department stores. Here’s our guide to family-friendly and alternative holiday movie theater events you can check out around Phoenix this holiday season. HARKINS always has a creative selection of classic films it screens every Tuesday night at 7 p.m., This month, Harkins will be screening holiday movies for kids and adults. On Dec. 5, it’s the ensemble rom-com Love Actually . This is certainly one for just mom and dad to see on a date night. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation will be shown on Dec. 12 followed by Home Alone on Dec. 19. On Dec. 26, Harkins screens Die Hard , the greatest non- Christmas/Christmas movie. This one is definitely not for younger children, but it may be a good escape for parents looking to spend time with their older kids. Harkins is also doing special 10 a.m. Saturday family- friendly screenings starting with The Polar Express on Dec. 2, White Christmas on Dec. 9, Elf on Dec. 16 and a personal favorite, It’s A Wonderful Life on Dec. 23. Harkins’ classic movie screenings are always $5 for all ages no matter the theater and are featured at nearly all Valley Harkins locations including the relatively new Camelview at Fashion Square. AMC in conjunction with Fathom Events always features one-of-a-kind event screenings. Fathom Events specializes in screening live theatrical shows that you otherwise could not see in Phoenix. The Meshuga Nutcracker!: The Chanukah Musical will be screening Dec. 19. It’s the classic Tchaikovsky ballet redone as an outrageous musical. Fathom will also be screening a live production of the classic Nutcracker ballet. THE ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE in Chandler will have a number of holiday screenings. The location will have screenings of Elf , Home Alone and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation that are aimed at older kids, but mostly adults. They offer a Kids Camp screening of the Jim Carrey version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas and a PBS Holiday Mix that includes appearances by Bob the Builder, Nature Cat and Thomas the Tank Engine. THE FILM BAR in Phoenix isn’t necessarily a family venue, but will be screening the rare and embarrassing Star Wars Christmas Special on Dec. 8.
