57 NOVEMBER 2017 ARCAD A NEWS By Rachael Bouley Delaney Howard has never let a few bumps in the road slow her down as she chases her dreams. The talented point and shooting guard earned an exclusive honor earlier this year when she was invited to try out for USA Basketball’s 16U Girls team. Some of the top coaches in the country took notice of her potential and flew her to Colorado Springs for the tryouts – a huge deal for a young athlete who has been dedicated to the sport since sixth grade. “I felt honored and it boosted my confidence to know they wanted to have me there, and I learned how the best coaches in the country train,” Delaney said. “We did drills and scrimmages, but we also had time off the court where we got to do leadership games and get to know each other.” It was a valuable lesson in hard work, something that she can apply easily to her budding basketball career. She’s fully embraced life as a basketballer since she first started playing at the local YMCA, where her dad, Darrell Howard, helped put together a team. “I had a coworker whose daughter plays basketball, so she planted the seed in me that Delaney would be a good basketball player,” Darrell said. “She is athletic and smart, and when I posed the idea to her, she was up for anything and everything, so we just started from there and she was really good.” It wasn’t long before she moved on to play at a club level, eventually leaving Arizona School for the Arts to pursue playing on a high school team. After time at Central High and Arcadia High School, she’s found a fit at Coronado High School. While she had to sit out her sophomore season as a transfer, she’s looking forward to upcoming tryouts, with her eye on two goals for the season. “One is to be a team captain and the other is to have my points per game average in the upper double digits,” she said. “For the future, I’m trying to get a basketball scholarship.” Her motivation is fueled by her self- confidence, positive mentality and undeniable love of the sport. “You get to meet a lot of different people who have something in common with you, and it’s a way to forget about everything that’s happening in your life and just focus on one thing.
