Sometimes you just need a warm heart and helping hand to make it through. Fortunately, many places in Phoenix strive to provide endless services and opportunities for the less fortunate. Many missions, volunteer groups, and foodbanks really amp things up around the holidays. So this Thanksgiving, if you find yourself a little down on your luck, or know of someone who is, let these wonderful organizations take care of you. THE SOCIETY OF ST. On Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23, families and individuals are welcome to enjoy a warm, filling meal – no advanced notice required; all walk-ins accepted—however, with the society serving nearly 5,000 meals, wait times in line may be lengthy. But with a spread comprised of roasted turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, cornbread stuffing, green beans, dinner rolls and pumpkin pie the wait is well worth it. For more: 602-266-1673. THE SALVATION ARMY 2707 E Van Buren St, AZ 85008 The Salvation Army is renowned for going all out on Turkey Day for needy local residents. Their annual Thanksgiving Dinner is an event, not just a meal, with entertainment, games, and free haircuts for children. There are no restrictions and no reservations required. Last year, the event was so large that the Phoenix Convention Center was one of the only local venues that could accommodate the crowds. MARY’S FOOD BANK 2831 N 31st Ave, 85009 Providing boxes of food to needy individuals and families in the valley for decades, St. Mary’s is one organization you can always count on for a heaping box of Thanksgiving vittles. On November 23, you can either walk into the facilities or use their “drive through” option. The fluidity with which this process runs has been perfected over the years (and kind of resembles a racecar pit stop – pull in, park your car, box comes out, and you’re on your way). Details on the dates and times for pick up, and if advanced notice/requests are required will be released the first week of November. For more: 602-242-3663. PHOENIX RESCUE MISSION 338 N 15th Ave, AZ 85007 Phoenix Rescue Mission offers both in- house meals and walk-in/drive up service. The boxes aren’t only filled with all the ingredients to make a delicious meal at home, they also include festive decorations and a letter of love and support. Boxes are handed out at a distribution event the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Or, if you’d like to skip the hassle of preparing the meal, come to the Mission’s dining hall to enjoy a hot turkey meal with all the fixings. For more: 602-688-6211.
