56 OCTOBER 2017 ArcAd A News ARCADIA HIGH SCHOOL It has been a tough go of things for Tony Stillings in his first few months as head coach at Arcadia High School. The new play-caller has been instituting a new offense for the Titans, where pass-happy quarterbacks and five receiver sets have taken the place of the run-heavy wing-t formation. The first six games have been tough however, as the Titans have yet to get a win. “We’re not detail- oriented right now,” said Stillings, who predicted before the season that it would take some time to get the program to where he would like it to be. “We opened up playing the number one, seven and three teams in the state, and against teams like that you have to do the little things. You have to get the details right when you play teams like that, and I think our attention to detail hasn’t been where I’ve wanted it to be.” The Titans hope to turn things around by improving the run game, which will then keep the defenses honest, allowing the passing offense to thrive. REMAINING SCHEDULE: 10/6 vs. North Canyon - 7 p.m. 10/20 @ Notre Dame Prep - 7 p.m. 10/27 vs. Chaparral - 7 p.m. BROPHY Playing in the biggest conference in the state means that there are no easy matchups. Brophy has found this out the hard way this season, sporting a 1-5 record going into the month of October. Scooter Molander’s Broncos got their win in dramatic fashion, with a one-point win over Westview. But losses against Pinnacle, Desert Ridge, Highland, Desert Vista and Mountain View have put the always competitive Brophy in a tough spot this season. Senior Noah Gonzales has led the team at quarterback, throwing for over 1000 yards in five games, while both Donovan Arthur and Xavier Juniel have picked up over 250 total receiving yards. On the defensive side of the ball, junior Marques White has led the team in tackles with 56, right in front of junior Andrew Onyepunuka, who has 51. Onyepunuka leads the Broncos in sacks, with five. REMAINING SCHEDULE: 10/6 @ Basha - 7 p.m. 10/13 vs. Perry - 7 p.m. 10/20 vs. Chandler - 7 p.m. CAMELBACK HIGH SCHOOL In his second year as Camelback High School’s head coach, Joseph Brissette is already seeing results. Last year the Spartans sported a 3-7 record at the end of the season. This year’s squad has nearly equaled that win total before September is done. The team had opening losses to Fairfax and North High School before winning big at home against Maryvale, 45-0. The team won its second game against Alhambra, scoring 13 points in the fourth quarter to complete a 33-27 comeback. Junior Eric Marquez has been under center for most of the snaps, passing for six touchdowns and throwing for over 480 yards. The team’s running game has been led by Abukar Abdi, a senior who has rushed for over 750 yards already this season. Receiving playmakers include junior Shawn Charles and sophomore Marcus Williams. REMAINING SCHEDULE: 10/6 vs. Independence - 7 p.m. 10/20 @ Glendale - 7 p.m. 10/27 @ Carl Hayden Community - 7 p.m. VERITAS PREP The Falcons got off to a hot start this season, beating North Pointe Prep 19-6 in the first game of the year. The sledding became tougher as September wore on, with losses to San Manuel, Scottsdale Christian Academy, Bisbee and San Tan Foothills. Team captains this season include running back Sebastian Bautista, linebacker Anthony Jakubczyk, lineman Payson McCallister and lineman Joseph Hirsch. REMAINING SCHEDULE: 10/6 vs. Scottsdale Prep - 7 p.m. 10/13 vs. Arizona College Prep - 7 p.m. 10/20 @ Glendale Prep - 7 p.m. 10/27 vs. Antelope - 7 p.m. Around the area – high school football roundup View have put the always competitive Gonzales has led the Foothills.
