34 OCTOBER 2017 ARCAD A NEWS By Mallory Gleich Summer is coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean your garden has to as well. There are a plethora of flowers, herbs, fruits and veggies that thrive during the fall, so get your gardening tools ready. With the help from Berridge Nursery and Arcadia Color Garden, here are some helpful tips for a successful fall garden. Melinda Walton, who operates Berridge Nursery, says successful fall planting revolves around determining accurate answers to these three questions: Where is the sun, how much are you watering, and do you fertilize? Once you’ve decided where you’d like to plant your garden, it is important to gauge how much sun that area gets so you know which plants to plant there. “If you have an area of your yard that gets morning sun only in October – April, but the same area receives all-day, direct sun in the hot summer months, you need to select a plant that is rated for full sun so it can tolerate the hottest heat of the day,” says Walton. For the cooler September to March season, you’ll want full sun for your garden. “Our sun, in the winter, goes to the south, so planting on the north side of a building or house is not a good idea,” said Bruce Solomon from Arcadia Color Garden. “Pick a spot that gets lots of sun so your garden can grow!” If you’re watering indoor or outdoor plants in containers, it’s a good idea to water them heavily so that you can see the water come out the bottom. The more soil, the less you have to water the plant, depending on what it is. For the first few weeks, make sure to water your plants frequently. Fertilizing is based on plant type. You can fertilize monthly or as little as three times a year. It is important to prepare the soil before planting your garden, especially if you’re planting an in-ground garden, which requires more labor than a “raised bed” type of garden. If you’ve already got a garden area set up, make sure to till the soil before the fall season and add organic matter and/or manures to ensure successful growth. “If you’re growing in containers, a prepared potting mix or raised garden mix is good,” said Julie Moody of Arcadia Color Garden. If you’re a first time gardener, it’s important to start small. “For first time gardeners, I would say to try out container gardening. It’s easy and manageable,” said Moody. “Starting off with a container garden is a way to ensure that you don’t overwhelm yourself.” There are advantages to growing during the fall season as well. There are fewer insect issues which makes it easier to maintain a garden, especially if you’re growing edible plants. Also, growing in the fall doesn’t require as much water as it does during the summer months. All right, gardeners! Now that you know what to do, grab your rakes, trowels and spades and get your garden growing!
