23 OCTOBER 2017 ArcAd A News By Elaina Verhoff You might be feeling crafty, or not wanting to shell out the big bucks for a costume that will be worn once, or maybe you just want to avoid the hassle of digging through the Halloween costumes at Target. Luckily, with a few simple supplies and household items, it’s easy to craft a costume at home. Here are a few ideas to get you started! ROBOT Materials: large cardboard box, scissors, aluminum foil, tape If your family likes to get crafty, a cardboard box is the ultimate starting point. No boxes around the house? We went “costume” shopping at the FedEx store last year, and the young man working there was quite helpful, letting my daughter “try on” different box sizes until we found the perfect fit. She then cut holes for her head and arms, covered the box with aluminum foil, and voila – instant robot. You could take it even further and use flexible tubing? (available at hardware and home improvement stores) for the arms and legs, and a smaller box for the head. Spray-painted lids make great knobs and buttons. EMOJI FACE MASKS Materials: felt, googly eyes, popsicle stick, glue Whether your favorite emoji is crazy tongue face or heart eyes, it’s easy to make a mask and bring your favorite digital expression into the real world. Just cut out the base shape and cut and glue on pieces and jumbo googly eyes as needed. Then glue onto a popsicle stick handle. Hint: Use a glue gun to make sure you don’t lose an eye before the trick or treating is done. SNAPCHAT FILTERS Materials: Crepe paper, scissors, glue stick, pencil, glue, party blower, cardstock, plastic headband, hot glue gun Leave it to bloggers to come up with the best do-it-yourself (DIY) costume ideas. Jordan at Oh Happy Day dreamed up the idea of Snapchat filters as Halloween costumes, and the results were more than insta-worthy. The best part? Using a party blower to blow out a rainbow “tongue” (for your unicorn costume) or a dog tongue for the puppy dog costume. For full instructions on how to create your own unicorn, dog, butterfly and flower crown costumes visit ohhappyday.com/2016/10/ snapchat-filter-costumes/ ALEXANDER HAMILTON Materials: small shopping bag, scissors, cotton balls or cotton pads, ribbon, glue If the soundtrack to Hamilton is burned in your brain, your tween might think it’s pretty cool to dress up as the one and only Alexander Hamilton. The outfit is easy. Some black leggings, a white shirt, and a black jacket from mom or dad’s closet. The showstopper is a DIY wig, easily assembled with a bag of cotton balls or cotton pads glued onto a small shopping bag. Full instructions at funfindsformom. com/blog/how-to-make-a-presidential- powdered-wig. Easy do-it-yourself Halloween costume ideas Left: DIY costumes are cost-effective and fun for the whole family. This wig for an Alexander Hamilton costume only requires a small shopping bag, cotton pads and glue. Right: A homemade robot costume only requires a box, scissors and aluminum foil. Half of the fun is “shopping” for the box as a family! Financial Aid Workshops for interested parents on testing days.
