44 SEPTEMBER 2017 Arc A d A News By Kaylee Sumpter As the 2017 season gets underway, Arcadia Titans girls volleyball coach Jackie Bunker is looking for her team to take the next step. The goal is to improve on 2016’s 24-14 overall record, with a 5-4 sectional record. Bunker’s first season with the Titans ended in the first round of the playoffs with a loss to Chaparral. “We always talk about getting two percent better every time we step in the gym,” Bunker said. “We will be practicing, watching films, setting goals, and working together as one unit to prepare for the common goal of a successful season.” Bunker has coached volleyball for 13 years, ranging from club volleyball to college. Bunker coached at Arizona State University for three years, serving as director of volleyball operations, assistant beach volleyball coach and beach volleyball recruiting coordinator. “I love helping athletes grow, in both their development as a volleyball player and as an individual,” Bunker said. “I also love helping athletes move on to college.” The varsity volleyball team worked hard to prepare for their first game of the season. The girls continue to stay focused on their training. “This season, I want to be mindful of helping each athlete be successful in their goals, as well as helping out our team reach its fullest potential,” Bunker said. “Arcadia fans can look forward to a fast-paced, competitive team that has incredible defensive intensity and always fights till the end.” The team will be led by Jade Smith, who was an all-city player last year and named to first team all-region. Smith is known as a powerful hitter, who has already impressed her coach with the leadership role she has taken on this offseason. Another star to watch is three-year letterman Rylie Satran, who is verbally committed to playing sand volleyball at San Jose State. “As a team, we always strive to be competitive and win,” Bunker said. “It is extremely challenging to win state, but it is important to have that in your mind at the beginning of the season. For my athletes individually, I want them all to leave the season better than they started as a player, a teammate, and a person.” AHS girls volleyball looks to build on last year’s trip to playoffs This year’s Arcadia High girls volleyball team will be led by the powerful-hitting Jade Smith (left), who was all-city and first team all-region last year.
