26 SEPTEMBER 2017 ARCAD A NEWS ARNOLD COLE Arnold Cole, local business owner and longtime Arcadia resident, passed away on August 11 at the age of 92. By his side was his wife, Muriel Ann Cole, who he had been married to for 74 years. They both grew up in Billings, Montana and were high school sweethearts. “I didn’t realize how many people he had helped and impacted until everyone started reaching out,” said Muriel, when speaking about the response to Arnie’s death. “He was a responsible and charismatic person.” Arnie got married to Muriel in 1943, while on leave during his service in World War II. He served as a corpsman with the United States Marine Corps two years later in the Battle of Iwo Jima, going ashore on the second wave. Arnie suffered a chest wound from a sniper’s bullet while on land, two days short of a 36-day campaign. After he was discovered alive, he was transported to Guam and then San Diego, where he spent two years recovering from losing a lung and four ribs. Muriel, who had just finished a year of cadet nurse training, left Montana to be by her husband’s side. “When I was a kid, there was a trunk at the foot of my parents’ bed that I wasn’t supposed to go in,” said Tom Cole, Arnie’s son. “Once when they were gone, I went in it and found a box of medals. I still remember opening up the war medals section in the encyclopedia and matching the medal with the Bronze Star.” The Coles lived in the same house in Arcadia for 64 years. At the center of his life was his marriage to Muriel, who he called the moral center of his world. Arnie operated two famous local stores, Clark’s Citrus and Dates, which he ran for 30 years, then opened Arnie’s Health Foods for another 30 years. He loved his work, even having his daughter Susan drive him in after he stopped driving. He stopped working just six days before his death. “He was a strong person,” said Muriel, who is 92-years-old herself. “He was very protective of his family and was a good provider. We had our ups and downs, but I have no complaints.” Arnie is survived by Muriel, and their three children, Tom, Judy and Susan, their spouses, Lucinda, Jerry Burghout and Bill Kleinz, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. JOSEPH HAMILTON PORTER III Joseph Hamilton Porter III, a local Arcadia resident and renowned golfer, passed away on July 2 at the age of 72. Joe was born in California in 1945, but grew up in the Arcadia area and never left. He attended Arcadia High School, where he medaled in back-to-back state championship golf teams, and won the Arizona State Junior Golf Championship and the Arizona Amateur. Golf was to become one of the defining mainstays in Joe’s life. He would lead the golf team at Phoenix College to a National Junior College Championship, before graduating from Arizona State University with a B.S. in Finance and All-American golf honors in 1967. After college, he served in the National Guard, before heading on to the PGA Tour. He spent 11 years on the tour, finishing in the top ten of tournaments nine different times. Eventually, he would build a successful career in commercial real estate while raising his children. But he never left golf entirely behind. Joe was invited to join The Thunderbirds, a charitable organization that uses golf to raise money for children, families, and those in need in the greater Phoenix area. Joe was a member of the Arizona Golf Hall of Fame and was honored with the NAIOP Lifetime Achievement Award for excellence in Arizona Real Estate. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Beth (Hall); son, Josh of Scottsdale; daughters, Blair (Darrell) Hornbacher, of Chandler; Lindsey (Lance) Wade of Atlanta; and grandchildren; Morgan Rock, Porter Wade, and Connely Wade.
