20 SEPTEMBER 2017 ARCAD A NEWS friendly alternative to chemical cleaners. In 1986, to celebrate the Statue of Liberty’s 100th Birthday, its inner copper walls are cleaned and restored with baking soda which removes 99 years of grime and leaves the copper undamaged and completely clean. And my personal favorite, in 2000 the use of baking soda comes full circle as kids begin using baking soda to mummify things like hot dogs for science projects (www.brightnest. com). The uses really are endless. Here are several ways to use baking soda. Especially if you like to make your own products. Enjoy! 1) Cleaning Toilets – Here is a way to get your kids involved in cleaning toilets.Start with pouring some vinegar around the rim and in the basin, wait a few minutes then shake some baking soda inside and it will foam up. Scrub with brush. Maybe call it a volcano and they will get excited? CHEMFREE LIFE By Mallory Gleich Prince of Peace Lutheran Church has been in the Arcadia neighborhood since 1958, and this year, they’ve got something to celebrate: their preschool program has been around for 50 years! Back in the day, Arcadia was an up and coming neighborhood. Many elementary schools were being built, and Prince of Peace noticed that there weren’t many preschools. “The church saw a great opportunity to serve the people of Arcadia and took the initiative to build a preschool for the surrounding neighborhoods,” said Angela Sherrill, who works at the school. The preschool started off in 1967 as a little house that was called the “Kinderhouse” with trailers to serve as five rooms. In 2000, the preschool was expanded to build a 10 classroom building. Now, the preschool is home to 23 teachers and 210 students. Several of the teachers have been working at the school for multiple decades. Cindy St. Clair has been teaching for 32 years, Lida Spero has been teaching for 31 years, Barb Hayford has been teaching for 30 years and Donna Hunt has been teaching for 25 years. “I really feel when the parents go to work that they can know their kids are happy,” said Hunt. “They can do their jobs and enjoy their day, knowing that their children are safe and enjoying themselves. I wake up in the morning and want to go to work. Prince of Peace has been a fabulous place to work all these years.” Preschool celebrates 50 years By Sara Lemons Vaules Is it possible that baking soda could have enough uses to literally replace everything you use in your home? Yes! In moving towards a chemical free life and home, it can truly be used for so many simple tasks that I decided to highlight it this month. Turns out it has quite a history too, which makes this product even more interesting. In 3500 BC, ancient Egyptians use natron (primarily comprised of sodium carbonate) as a soap-like cleaning agent. They also used it to make mummies. In 1843, Alfred Bird, a British chemist, made the first version of baking powder to help his wife, who was allergic to yeast. In 1846 the Arm & Hammer brand is created and the iconic logo that exists today (which represents Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and metalworking) is introduced in 1867. In 1970, Arm & Hammer is the sole sponsor of the very first Earth Day where baking soda gains attention as an eco- 2) Facial Scrub – Baking soda can be used as a gentle and natural exfoliator for the face (not every day though). Just mix one tablespoon of baking soda with enough water to make a paste. 3) Natural antacid – Many people swear by 1/4 - 1/2 a teaspoon of baking soda in water to ease indigestion. 4) Cleaning hair and toothbrushes – Soak the brush in a mixture of baking soda and warm water to clean. Then splash the toothbrushes with hydrogen peroxide. 5) Garbage Disposal – Put some in the garbage disposal with a rind of lemon to clean. 6) Scouring Powder – This one requires the addition of a few other simple ingredients. Just mix together and add to a plastic bag or make a shaker jar by adding holes to a mason jar! • 1 cup baking soda • 1/2 cup salt (not iodized) • 1/2 cup washing soda • 5 drops lemon essential oil (if desired) 7) Natural Oven Cleaning – Simply sprinkle baking soda on bottom of oven, spray or sprinkle with water until it forms a paste and leave for a few hours. Stuck-on grease and food wipes right off. The interesting history and limitless uses of baking soda Financial Aid Workshops for interested parents on testing days.
