4 AUGUST 2017 ARCAD A NEWS By Robin Sewell By the time you finish reading this article, at least four people will die of heart disease and stroke. It sounds unfathomable but it’s a fact: cardiovascular disease is America’s number one cause of death. It doesn’t discriminate between men and women for it is an equal opportunity killer. Fortunately, in the Valley of the Sun, there’s a weapon of sorts that could ultimately change the way we think and act in regards to heart disease and potentially save lives. That weapon is the Halle Heart Children’s Museum in Tempe, the only one of its kind in the country. “When you come here, you are actually learning information that will put you on a path to better overall health while having fun,” says Halle Heart Children’s Museum Director, Cara Foster. “Cardiovascular disease is 80 percent preventable and the museum is the perfect place to demonstrate what simple actions can be taken now.” Until recently, the museum was open exclusively to school field trips and private tours, but now it’s open to the public. Just to be clear, this is not a do-not-touch, hands- off museum. Here, both kids and adults are encouraged to play, interact and jump around, all while learning how to care for their hearts. The moment you walk through the doors, your senses come alive from the bright, rainbow colors, carnival-like sounds. You feel the impulse to squeeze everything around you immediately. The idea is to first learn and understand how the heart works and frankly, it makes a whole lot more sense when the circulatory system is made up of interactive models that actually demonstrate how it happens. It’s also super cool to see the look on the faces of the kids when they hear the difference in heartbeats of elephants and hummingbirds. Once you understand the how and why the heart is so important, then it’s time to find out all the things you should and shouldn’t do to keep your heart in tip-top shape. There’s a pretend grocery store complete with check-out lanes and food scanners where you shop, read labels and learn about healthy food choices. In an area called “the beat goes on,” guests can skip, jump, run, and hop their way to a happy heart. Maintaining that happy heart is a personal mission for the 2017 Greater Phoenix Heart Ball chairman, Char Hubble, whose mom had congestive heart failure and a quadruple bypass. “We impact more than 40,000 children a year teaching them a healthy lifestyle , said Hubble. “The fact is diet and exercise habits started in childhood can begin a lifetime of heart health or heart damage.” We all know that kids can be our greatest teachers so even though the museum is aimed at kids, the adults learn just as much, if not more than the children. “Walking through the museum during meetings, I’ve heard it first-hand. There are perfect teaching moments and reflection for both adults and kids to talk about choices at the grocery store or what they would do in a situation if someone stopped breathing,” said Foster. “This place gives both audiences a chance to discuss what they are experiencing here.” Hopefully those hands-on experiences will not only make you squeal with delight but lead to a healthier lifestyle and a heartbeat that remains strong for the rest of your life. — Robin Sewell is the host and executive producer of the Emmy Award winning Arizona Highways Television. Family fun and life-saving education at Halle Heart Tempe’s Halle Heart Children’s Museum is no stroll-through and look facility. Here, both adults and kids are educated about heart health through fun activities and hands-on learning. For more: www.hhcm.org.
