He has been a high school Biology teacher, Physical Education teacher, Athletic Director, Assistant Principal, and now Principal of Ingleside. Dr. Thuman obtained his Bachelor’s of Education from Michigan State University, his Masters of Education from DePaul University, and his Doctorate of Business Administration from Argosy University. Madison Dr. Kerry Clark has been serving as an administrator for over a decade with three college preparatory schools. Now principal of Madison Highland Prep, Dr. Clark has led the school to earn an A label from the Arizona Department of Education. Dr. Clark earned his Bachelor’s from the University of Alberta, and later achieved a Master’s from ASU and an Ed.D in educational leadership from NAU. Phoenix Country Day School Andrew Rodin began his journey in education after receiving a Bachelor’s in political science from Columbia University and a Master’s in education administration and policy analysis from Stanford. Rodin has been a great leader at Phoenix Country Day School as he provides the groundwork for the relationships between the students of PCDS and their teachers, mentors, coaches and administration. Saint Theresa The 2017-2018 school year will be the first for Thomas Dertinger as the principal at Saint Theresa Catholic School. He will be replacing Patrick Reardon, who served as the head of Saint Thomas for the past three years. Dertinger spent the last 13 years as an elementary school principal in Richmond, Virginia. He received his Doctorate in Education at the University of Albany and an MBA from the University of Virginia. Saint Thomas Mary Coffman has been serving as principal of Saint Thomas for almost 10 years. Coffman furthered her college education after achieving a Master’s in Education with an emphasis on differentiated instruction. Prior to working as an administrator, Coffman taught grades three through community college. Coffman is not only familiar with, but dedicated to Catholic education, as all of her children attended and graduated from local Catholic schools. Tavan Margaret Serna has been principal of Tavan Elementary for 18 years. After earning her Bachelors of Education from ASU, Serna obtained a Masters of Educational Leadership from NAU and attended the Principal Leadership Academy for Educational Leadership and Administration at Harvard University. Serna has successfully moved Tavan Elementary to the Arizona Department of Education’s highest distinguished level. Veritas David Dean has been working in education for more than 20 years as both a teacher and administrator. Dean received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Kansas and his Master’s Degree in Classics. Before becoming headmaster of Veritas Prep, Dean served as president of St. John the Apostle School, and has led schools in Texas, New Mexico and Louisiana. Xavier Sister Joan Nuckols became principal of Xavier in July 2016 after working in education for more than 40 years. Sister Joan has been working at Xavier since 1974 when she became a history teacher. Since then, she has also served as the Social Studies Department chair, vice principal of academics and campus ministry, and now principal. Nuckols graduated with a Bachelor’s from Clarke College and Master’s degrees from both St. Louis University and Grand Canyon University, respectively. In the midst of the back to school season, teachers, administrators and staff work hard to ease students’ transitions. Below, we commemorate a few of the many principals making a difference in our children’s lives. Brophy Bob Ryan joined the Brophy faculty in 2000 after working full time at Andre House in Phoenix, which serves the homeless population in downtown Phoenix. He was officially named Brophy’s principal in November of 2006. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame and his Master’s in education from ASU. He also has a Master’s in Catholic School Leadership from the University of San Francisco. Christ Lutheran Jon Doyle graduated from Concordia University with a Bachelor’s in Biology and a Master’s in Administration. Being called to work in education, Doyle has not only taught, but has also served as an assistant principal in both California and Arizona. Now principal of Christ Lutheran School, Doyle reflects, “As a teacher, I needed to feel supported by administration and now that I’m in the administrator seat that is one of main goals. I want our faculty and staff to feel supported.” Echo Canyon Kat Hughes will be starting her second year as principal at Echo Canyon School. She started as principal last year, when the school was called Arcadia Neighborhood Learning Center. Hughes was an administrator in the Higley Unified School District beginning in 2008, before moving to Scottsdale. 45 AUGUST 2017 ARCAD A NEWS By Elaina Verhoff Arcadia High School Principal Todd Stevens is just a few weeks into the job, but already the school and the neighborhood have made a big impression on him. “It’s been incredible,” Stevens said. “Every interaction I have had with parents, students, and just this morning our student body president, has been exceptionally kind and welcoming.” Stevens, who officially assumed the role of principal in June, has a long history of involvement in education – both as an educator and administrator. For the past seven years, he has served as an administrator in the M a d i s o n S c h o o l District, first as assistant principal at Madison Meadows and most recently as the principal of Madison Park Middle School. Prior to that, he taught math and science in the Valley. Nathan Slater, Arcadia’s principal for the past three years, has moved on to a new position in the Scottsdale Unified School District, now serving as director of athletics. Stevens is excited about many aspects of his new role at the high school for a number of reasons, including Arcadia High’s reputation for academic excellence, its emphasis on fine and performing arts and the Arcadia community. “I feel a sense of community here in the Arcadia neighborhood that I haven’t experienced elsewhere in Arizona,” he said. When asked what he hopes to accomplish as principal, Stevens said his ultimate goal is to prepare students for post-secondary success. “I will be judged by the success kids have after graduation. I want them to gain the skills and academics not only to succeed, but to excel at the next level,” he said. And how have his past experiences prepared him for the new position? “Our experiences make us the people we are,” Stevens said. “I understand the importance of relationships, honesty and follow-through.” Relationship-building will play a key role, and Stevens noted that he welcomes open dialogue with Arcadia parents, who have already been informative, inquisitive and generous with their time and financial resources. “The more (parents are) involved, the better off kids will be,” he noted. Stevens is also looking for ward to building relationships with Arcadia’s more than 70 teachers, who will soon be returning to the high school for five days of meetings in preparation for the new school year. In a state where there is a significant teacher shortage and educators are leaving the profession in droves, he says Arcadia has only experienced a 10 to 12 percent turnover, a positive reflection on the school. “I am lucky and I understand that,” said Stevens, whose office wall is adorned with a jumbo Arcadia “A” decal (a Father’s Day gift from his family). “This is a wonderful campus and wonderful staff.
