6 JULY 2017 ARCAD A NEWS By Janette Reeves Here’s the good news about the summer heat: Your seasonal allergies should improve now that it’s above 100 degrees. In May, the average high temperature is 95. By June, it’s 104. By July, it’s 106. And, let’s not think about August just yet. For Valley residents, the heat can be as dangerous as the snow is in colder climes. Because you can’t hibernate all summer, adjust your schedule to the cooler hours of the day, heed the advice below and use common sense: • Drink lots of water. Recommendations vary on the exact amount to drink, but about two liters a day is average. The best way to tell if you’re getting enough water is the color of your urine. Clear means you’re well hydrated. Dark yellow is a sign of dehydration. Drink more water if you feel thirsty or if you’re exercising or working outdoors. Drink about 16 ounces before you head out the door. Then drink about 8 ounces every 20 minutes. Carry enough water with you. Sports drinks also can replace electrolytes lost by sweating. Better yet, consider moving your exercise routine indoors for the summer or to the pool. • Run errands, exercise or do outdoor work in the early morning and late evening, when the average lows range from the 60s and 70s in May and June to the 80s in July. • Keep your car cool. On the hottest days, the interior temperature of a car can reach as high as 200 degrees. Look for covered or shaded parking spots, use sunscreens, and never leave children or pets in the car. Seatbelt buckles, steering wheels, seats and car seats can be hot enough to cause burns. • Wear shoes outside. The sidewalk can be hot enough to cause first-degree burns, particularly on a toddler’s sensitive feet. • Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing in a fabric, such as cotton or linen that wicks away sweat. Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before going outside. Remember to apply to the tops of your ears and the back of your neck. Be sure to re-apply every two hours, after swimming or sweating, or as directed on the product. A hat and sunglasses protect your scalp and eyes. • Don’t mix alcohol and caffeine with heat. This will contribute to dehydration and could cause heat-related illnesses. Keep in mind that there’s an end in sight to triple digits — the comfortable fall months will be here before you know it! — Janette Reeves, DO, specializes in family medicine with HonorHealth Medical Group.
