So, it’s only fitting that David Karstadt, 8th degree Taekwondo Black Belt, teaches a class integrating these concepts with physical defense moves. Since 1996, his Self-Empowerment/Self-Defense class is required as part of the freshmen Physical Education curriculum at Xavier College Prep. Karstadt visualized not just teaching self-defense, but creating a more empowering class to integrate mind, body and spirit. “I integrate the five tenets...we talk about how you have to have a balance in everything,” Karstadt said. “I’m teaching girls how to set boundaries to keep them safe so they don’t have to fight.” His program teaches “trusting your gut feelings” and “drawing a line in the sand” to establish a proactive and aware mindset. Xavier College Prep, a private Catholic high school in Central Phoenix, has approximately 1,200 students. Its mission is “to prepare young women of faith with the knowledge, skills and integrity to meet the challenges of a changing global society in a positive and productive manner.” “When we introduced Xavier’s self-defense program more than 20 years ago, our objective was to equip our students with critical skills that would promote safety awareness and inspire confidence,” said Lynn Winsor, XCP vice principal for activities and athletic director. In their first class, Karstadt shares startling statistics to demonstrate to students why they need to be able to assess potentially dangerous situations. Nine out of ten rape victims are women. Seventy percent of female rape victims know their rapist as an acquaintance, relative or partner, according to Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN). Karstadt always emphasizes using the 40-yard dash first: if you can run to get away, that’s your best choice. “If they’re trying to attack you and they don’t have their hands on you, you run,” said freshman Grace Cromey. “You try to avoid confrontation as much as possible.” According to Karstadt, attacks feature four stages: visual, verbal, territorial and physical. The ideal situation is stopping someone at the visual and verbal stages by making eye contact and loudly telling them to leave. If confronted however, students learn and practice physical moves such as the front kick, palm thrust, and hammer fist, strategies to gain control and escape an assault situation. 47 JULY 2017 ARCAD A NEWS By Kaylee Sumpter The football teams at Coronado, Saguaro and Chaparral high schools will play on new, collegiate-level fields starting this season thanks to major renovations happening now. The process started back in May and the plan is for all three fields to be completed in time for the kickoff of the 2017 season in late August and early September. The much-needed work on the Scottsdale Unified School District sports facilities is being funded by a $229 million bond. “We made a deal that we would replace the unsafe fields,” said Louis Hartwell, chief business and operations officer for the Scottsdale Unified School District. “These high school fields were at the top of the list because they weren’t safe and the students were not able to use the track.” Each field will get new, softer turf that is safer for the athletes. Turf is also being added to the end zones and each high school will have its logo sewn in at the 50-yard line. The district is also planning on replacing the tracks around the fields starting in late October, when the lower daytime temperatures allow for the required pave ment work. The completed renovations will not only make the fields safer and more visually appealing, but they will also enable the district to attract large events. “Each of the high school fields will look similar to a collegiate field. The fields will be collegiate equivalent to the point where we could host national events,” Hartwell said. “We are all really excited about it!” The district aims to have the fields completed by the second week of August, just in time for the first home games of the season. If work is delayed, the schools have plans to play their early-season home games elsewhere. Hartwell said he’s pleased with the progress so far and notes that the work is already a couple days ahead of schedule. 3 Scottsdale high schools to get college-level football fields Chaparral High School’s football field and track are undergoing major renovations to extend and replace turf, stitch the school logo in at the 50-yard line and improve safety for athletes.
