45 JULY 2017 ARCAD A NEWS By Elaina Verhoff Troy Gerlach, head baseball coach at Arcadia High School, probably wouldn’t have predicted a trip to the state semi-finals at the start of the season. After all, it had been over a decade since the Titans had been that far in the playoffs. This is Gerlach’s fifth year coaching baseball at Arcadia, and he says it was a huge accomplishment to make it to the semifinals, with games being played at Arcadia, Tempe Diablo and Maryvale. “We had everything going for us. Confidence was high. The team had great chemistry, and they were working well together,” said Gerlach. “It wasn’t always pretty, but we found ways to win games and the guys came together as a group.” He says the spirit of teamwork was instrumental in the team’s trip to the semifinals. “When one guy couldn’t get the job done, another teammate picked him up. Everybody helped out and benefited our team. They did an outstanding job as a group coming together at the right time and playing their best baseball.” It wasn’t always this way. Early in the season, Gerlach says the players’ varying levels of commitment was driving a wedge in the team. “Some guys just wanted to have fun, some didn’t care, and some really wanted to be out there,” said Gerlach. “We had a team meeting and (the players) got a lot of things off their chests.” After clearing the air, the coach says he made some roster moves that set them up for success. “From that point on, we won nine in a row!” The team approach paid off when the Titans had to overcome a number of obstacles, including a wild ground ball that found its target in the mouth of a freshman player. A blood clot also sent the starting right fielder to the hospital, and he was out for the rest of the season. “‘Next Man Up’ was our motto,” said Gerlach. “I told the guys, you may not be playing right now, but if somebody has to step up and do the job, be ready. One through nine in our lineup, everybody contributed, did an outstanding job and played selflessly.” Gerlach says he is losing nine seniors, so they will continue moving in the right direction and doing their best each and every day. “If we can get 1% better every day then we move forward. We’ll build on what these guys did this year… throw strikes, play offensively and good things will happen.” Gerlach says he’s looking forward to the continued support of Arcadia High School community. “Our parents and families were there every night whether we were on the road or at home. They consistently cheered them on and supported our guys.” Several seniors on the team are going on to play college baseball at LSU, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Mesa Community College, Paradise Valley Community College, and Scottsdale Community College.
