30 JULY 2017 ARCAD A NEWS customers stopping by on a regular basis to get water, Harkison has had the chance to get to know entire families. “I’ve been here so long that I’m part of the community,” said Harkinson. “That’s the beauty that comes with being here for 25 years. The kids that started out coming By Rachael Bouley It’s been 25 years since Water Connection first opened its doors to the Arcadia community and the business is still going strong. Located in its original spot at 40th Street and Camelback Road, Water Connection offers purified drinking water, water storage solutions, bagged ice, dechlorinators and more. Its famous shaved ice is popular among young students on their way home from school and dedicated owner Denise Harkison is always there, serving local families with a smile. It all began with a bright idea and determination. With supportive parents ready to help and a desire to leave her career in retail behind, Harkison was motivated to pursue her goals of owning her own business. “Twenty-five years ago, purified water was a newer idea and we thought it would be a good business for us to start,” she said. “We just wanted to work for ourselves, and Phoenix water was horrendous and this was a nice affordable option. There was a need for it at the time and there still is.” While her parents have since passed away, Harkison feels blessed to have their help with the business, especially in the early days. For years, residents from across the Valley have made the drive to buy their water, which goes through a 10-stage purification process. “I have two very knowledgeable people working for me, Crystal and Sam, who understand the science of water purification,” Harkison said. Over the years, loyal regular customers and the Arcadia community have ensured steady business, one of the many reasons Harkison loves what she does. With many in with their parents are now bringing their own kids in for shaved ice.” Perhaps most popular of all is Harkison’s beloved dog Daisy, who makes regular appearances in the store. To celebrate its anniversary, Water Connection is saying thank you to the community with several promotions, including contests for free shaved ices, and one-time only discounted prepaid water. “I love coming to work every day. I never get any paperwork done because I’m too busy visiting with my nice customers,” said Harkinson. “We are blessed and we realize how lucky we are to be here,” she said. “I’m happy and I have no intention of retiring. This is something I can continue to do and I plan on being here.” Water Connection celebrates 25 years BUSINESS BRIEFS THE SMITH The Smith has opened at 3701 E. Indian School Road.
