50 JUNE 2017 Arc A d A News By Ian Kraft A magnificent season for the Arcadia High School Titans softball team ended bitterly with a 12-4 loss to Queen Creek High in the first round of the 2017 AIA Softball State Championships on April 29. Coming off of a 22-6 regular season, the girls were seeded seventh in the tournament, but ran into a tough Bulldogs squad. The Titans encountered some bad luck early on in the contest as both their center fielder and shortstop were knocked out of the game after colliding while attempting to field a fly ball. “That was a dagger,” said head coach Jason Foster, who completed his 14 th season with the team. “To end a season that way, it hurts. These girls worked so hard this season and deserved a better ending.” Even considering the team’s stellar record, Foster said the season would be most memorable for the athleticism of his players. “These girls were remarkable athletes,” Foster said. “So many of them played club ball in the offseason and were hyper- talented. Having girls with as much talent as these ones was a blessing. I just wish we could have had a complete squad going into the playoffs.” One difference maker Foster highlighted is third baseman Ari Abalos, who he called his glue whenever things went sour. “Ari was a captain for three years,” Foster said. “She wasn’t chosen by anybody, she simply stepped up into the role and never let go. She is a natural leader with a great passion for the game and a passion for her teammates.” Abalos, 18, is on her way to play softball for Portland State University in Oregon this fall. “I’m not the player I am today without the help I got from Foster and everyone at AHS,” Abalos said. “As excited as I am to continue playing, I am equally as sad to leave the people I met here behind.” Abalos cites her teammates as her greatest strength. “We were all super driven and super competitive,” Abalos said. “We all had one goal: to get better. Being on a team with this caliber of talent was awesome and, as people, they are really great. We’re definitely like sisters. I don’t think I could have asked for a better group of girls to work with.” Abalos will miss her teammates the most, but also highlighted Foster as key to her development as a player and a person. “ He’s a pretty great coach,” Abalos said. “He’s a man of few words. There was an expectation that we should succeed, so he never needed to say anything. He never yelled; he was never angry. He expressed to us how proud of us he was this season and never got on us. With Arcadia High School’s previous tennis coach stepping down, the school approached Carpenter about filling the role. The team was the defending state champions and loaded with talent. There was just one problem. Carpenter, who teaches physical education at Arcadia, had never coached tennis before. “I’m a track and football coach,” Carpenter said. “Tennis was just a sport I enjoyed during my leisure time. But I was happy to help these girls. I said I’d be willing to do anything the school needed me to do.” Although talented, the squad only had two seniors on the roster. The question going into the season was whether the young, talented team could mesh with its inexperienced coach. “I’m sure they were a little skeptical at first,” Carpenter said. “But they ended up being very receptive.” The first order of business for the new coach was learning the rules and regulations of high school tennis. There are six players per team. Players compete individually against the six opposing players. Then they split up to play three doubles matches. The first team to five wins takes the match. It can take a while to pick up the intricacies of the sport. “I didn’t realize that in tennis, you can’t coach the players while they’re playing,” Carpenter said. “In every sport I’ve ever coached, you’re allowed to help out your players from the sideline. In tennis, you can only coach them during the changeover. So that was a real obvious one that I had to learn.” Titans team leaders for this season included Katie Reed, Jillian Rasmussen and Isabelle Brown. Reed, who has been playing tennis since she was eight years old, complimented the squad’s teamwork. “We work very well as a team and support each other on and off the court,” Reed said. “That’s the most important quality of the game.” First-year coach Carpenter was also impressed with his players’ abilities. “Katie (Reed) and Jillian (Rasmussen) were state doubles champions,” Carpenter said. “They just had this amazing, non- verbal relationship, where they each knew exactly what the other one was doing.” Brown, a senior who plans on attending UC Santa Cruz, said her favorite part of the sport is the competitiveness and having to fight for the win. “You have to be patient, because great things happen over time,” Brown said. The team was confident going into the playoffs, but almost got tripped up in the second round against Cactus Shadows. “They were pretty good and they came to play,” Carpenter said. “We were actually down for a while in that one and we knew we had to get our stuff together.” The Titans eventually righted the ship and cruised to an undefeated season and a second consecutive state championship. With so many returning players, the team will be favored to make another deep playoff run next year. But will its new coach return? “I told the girls I would love to do it again,” Carpenter said. “It’s a genuine possibility. Who would’ve known?
