4 JUNE 2017 ARCAD A NEWS six in the evening. That’s a long day. I really feel when the parents go to work that they know their kids are happy. They can do their jobs and enjoy their day, knowing that their children are safe and enjoying themselves. I wake up in the morning and want to go to work. Prince of Peace has been a fabulous place to work all these years. Lida: I think 31 years speaks for itself! — Nick Smith How did you both become involved in teaching? Lida: I originally went to school for business management. I got into this profession in my 20s and I’ve been at Prince of Peace for 31 years. When I had my son, I wanted him to come to school with me, I didn’t want to leave him with anyone. Three of my four kids came through Prince of Peace. Donna: I moved to the Valley and my oldest son started school at Prince of Peace. I was a stay-at-home mom, but when my second son came to the school, I started volunteering in the classroom. I always wanted to have a job where I could be at home when my kids got done with school. When they all were in school full-time, I came back to Prince of Peace and I’ve been here 25 years. Now I’ve even had grandchildren come through the school. Lida: We’ve been teaching in the same classroom going on seven years. Donna: But we’ve known each other for over 20 years! We would sometimes teach an afternoon class together and we both did pre-K. When my teammate retired, Lida came by one day and I grabbed her and said, ‘you’ve got to work with me, I need a partner!’” Why is it so helpful to have two teachers in the classroom for preschool? Lida: Oh, you almost have to! You can always use a helping hand in every aspect of the classroom. If someone has an allergic reaction, if they fall down and hurt themselves, if they’re having a conniption fit, helping with classroom materials and planning. To do it all by yourself would be rough. Donna: I know this might sound crazy, but I almost feel like it’s a marriage. Working with kids in a team environment, we always feed off each other. I really feel like if there’s an issue with me, she picks up for me. Lida: We support each other. Donna: Absolutely. Socialization is a key point in this age group. So if one of the children is having a rough time emotionally, one of us can take the child and help them deal with whatever the issue is, and the other one can still run the classroom. What do each of you value about your teaching partner? Donna: I see Lida as being compassionate, loving, understanding. She’s able to read a child and know how to help them. Lida: And Donna is so good at stooping down to their level and helping to meet their needs. Donna: And that’s I think where we really click. You know, so many of these kids get here at seven in the morning and are here till THIS MONTH’S WINNERS: Donna Hunt and Lida Spero (Room 5: the Bears) – Prince of Peace Preschool NOMINATED BY: Natalie Thimsen, mother of Gia, a student at Prince of Peace Lida Spero (left) and Donna Hunt were nominated by Natalie Thimsen, whose daughter Gia attends the school.
