48 JUNE 2017 ARCAD A NEWS By Laura Stoddard In the greater metro Phoenix area, we are fortunate to have access to dozens of fantastic outdoor activities and hiking trails. In Arcadia, we have some of the best walking paths in the Valley. Many of these follow, cross, or connect at some point with the Arizona Canal Path, which isn’t hard to believe considering it stretches nearly 70 miles, snaking its way from Peoria all the way to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. The trails affiliated with the Canal are sometimes paved, sometimes not, and amble through myriad types of terrain and environments. Here are a few of our neighborhood favorites. THUNDERBIRD TRAIL Talk about starting your walk or run in a gorgeous place! The Thunderbird Trail begins at Phoenix’s historic Arizona Biltmore Resort, where a sculptural marker indicates its official starting point. The path is lined by beautiful and iconic desert vegetation, and very often you’ll find a family of ducks following beside you in the canal. Even though the path is flat, good shoes are advised as its uneven surface alternates between pavement, gravel and finely-grained sand. Most people do the loop that leads from the Biltmore to 40th Street and Camelback, and back, roughly three miles. The best part about this route is you’re literally steps away from Chelsea’s Kitchen at the turn-around point, making it easy to grab a bite for breakfast or dinner to reward yourself for getting out! INDIAN BEND WASH GREENBELT Just teetering on the border between Arcadia and Scottsdale stretches one of the area’s most popular and beautiful paths, completely paved, so it’s great for walking, running, pushing strollers or getting pulled on your skateboard by Fido. It’s an 11-mile loop that starts at Tempe Town Lake and meanders all the way up to Indian Bend Road, hence the name, the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt. Along this route (and only go as far as your motivation takes you that day, because there are dozens of opportunities to turn around), you run parallel to a lush golf course, ponds, beautiful foliage, well- maintained park and picnic areas, public restrooms, even exercise stations. The path tunnels under all the major cross streets you encounter, keeping you out of harm’s way, and allowing for a smooth, uninterrupted stroll. The paved path even has passing lines for slower movers to stay to the right when bikes or skates go whizzing past. Also of note, this recreational area/path is rated as one of Arizona’s top urban (green spaces), and is world-renowned for its flood control project. Visiting here after a downpour isn’t the best idea, as some areas do flood over. Get out and enjoy the sunshine, and be awed by this fantastic path right in the middle of the bustling Scottsdale. We recommend parking at Vista del Camino Park, just west of McClintock on McKellips Road, for free parking, and a perfect starting point. OLD CROSS CUT CANAL PARK PATH One of the best Arcadia paths is undoubtedly the Old Cross Cut Canal Path, a two-mile stretch of curving, paved concrete excellent for biking, rollerblading, strollers and even wheelchairs. The path doesn’t follow the canal, but instead runs north and south along 48th Street, from Indian School Road to McDowell Road. If you aren’t a fan of difficult walks, or kicking dirt off of your shoes at the end of a workout, this path is for you. And guess what? This path just happens to end at Arcadia Tavern, so weary travelers can procure some liquid fortification for the return trip.
