22 JUNE 2017 Arc A d A News By Rachael Bouley Arcadia Color Garden Nursery opened in April offering plants, flowers, gardening tools and more, plus a nod to local history and the famous Baker Nursery. Baker Nursery first opened on 40th Street and Osborn in 1968 and quickly became an Arcadia neighborhood favorite. In fact, Arcadia Color Garden President Tommy Jones got his start in the local nursery business by working at Baker during the early years. Although he moved on to help start another nursery in the late 70s, Jones remained friends with owners Jim and Collette Baker, visiting their business often before it closed in 2014 to make way for a housing development. Dedicated customers weren’t the only ones who missed Baker Nursery. Jones and many former employees shared the same sentiment. They decided to do something about it in January 2016, by developing a plan for a new nursery. The location, nestled on 52nd Street between McDowell and Oak, is only a few miles from the original Baker location. and Baker’s famous sign found a new home there and inspired the Color Garden’s logo. The new nursery serves a dual purpose of providing convenient access to everything needed to make yards and gardens beautiful, while keeping the former Baker staffers employed. When locals stop by, they will see several employees who served the community at Baker, including 25-year veteran Nursery Manager Julie Moody, Joy Duncan, Carolyn Hills, Bruce Solomon and others. “We have a team of familiar faces that hold decades of plant knowledge and experience with our Valley climate and growing conditions, and know the best selections of plants for our area,” said Operations Manager Bill Jones. “Baker Nursery was a great place to go, and the people working there along with the Bakers were as much of the place as the plants themselves.” With f lowers, vegetables, herbs, succulents, cacti, shrubs, trees, fertilizers and more, Color Garden offers a very similar inventory to Baker. “We are excited to serve many of the folks in Arcadia and indeed across the Valley that grew up knowing they had a comfortable spot to pick out their garden and landscape needs, get advice on a struggling plant or tree, and add to the outdoor spaces so many of us enjoy throughout most of the year in Arizona,” Bill said. With the support of many of Baker’s former customers, Color Garden has been a success so far. “It’s nice to see a lot of those same faces again,” Bill said. Named in honor of the beautiful blooms, vegetables and herbs that flourish in the desert climate, Color Garden aims to give locals personalized service and provide everything they need to make their yards and gardens a cherished part of their home. “As much great inspiration and memories as the Baker name holds, we think it should stand on its own and be proud of its wonderful heritage,” Bill said. “We plan to keep those memories alive and as we collect photos and memorabilia from the Baker era, we will be finding special ways to acknowledge the contributions the Baker Family made to our community.” Arcadia Color Garden Nursery combines the old and the new (From left to right) Arcadia Color Garden Nursery employees Carolyn Hills, Julie Moody (nursery manager) and Bruce Solomon worked at Baker Nursery before coming to Arcadia Color Garden.
