Quality Education. Preschool through Grade 8 By Michelle Donati-Grayman As Mother’s Day approaches every year, I find myself scouring stores and poring over websites in an attempt to find the perfect gift. This year, I started early and created a list that hopefully will serve as a resource to help Arcadians plan something special for the moms and motherly figures in their lives. Tea for Two Who doesn’t want to be queen for a day? Treat your mom like royalty at The Phoenician with afternoon tea, an English tradition the AAA Five Diamond resort has been offering for nearly 30 years. Full tea includes finger sandwiches, scones with Devonshire cream and preserves, pastries and fine tea blends for $42 per person. Upgrade to Royal Tea and add sparkling wine to your tea party for an additional $18 per person. The Phoenician will host a special Mother’s Day Tea, which will be accompanied by a live pianist, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 14. The cost is $60 per person. Reservations are required. Head to the Heard You might be her masterpiece, but if you want to share other works of art with your mom, take her to the Heard Museum for a rare opportunity to experience the work of two iconic Mexican artists. The Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera exhibit is part of a world tour that began late last year in Australia. Phoenix is the only North American stop. The exhibit features 33 masterpieces by the couple, including Kahlo’s famous self- portrait and Rivera’s “Calla Lily Vendor and Sunflowers.” It also includes photographs, clothing and jewelry from the Kahlo period, as well as an interactive experience for children. The exhibit runs through August 20. Museum admission is $18 for adults. Admission to the special exhibit is an additional $7 per person. Wine Her Over Both the Annual Verde Valley Wine Festival and the Arizona Sangria Festival take place over Mother’s Day weekend. Coincidence? Unlikely! The wine festival is happening in the historic town of Clarkdale, which is about a two-hour drive from Phoenix. It features 15 Arizona wineries, breweries, restaurants, art and live music. General admission is $35 and includes a wine glass, 10 libation tickets and food sampling. The sangria festival takes place at Rawhide in Chandler. It features more than a dozen sangria recipes, Spanish wine and cheese, craft beer tastings and food trucks. It also features tango and flamenco lessons as well as live music. The festival is being presented by the Calling all Angels Foundation and will benefit single parents going through cancer and the debilitating effects of radiation and chemotherapy. Tickets are $40 online or $45 at the gate. Tickets include a souvenir tasting glass, 15 sangria tastings and 5 craft beer tastings. Day at the Diamond She probably didn’t let you play ball in the house, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take her to the ballpark on Mother’s Day. The Arizona Diamondbacks take on the Pittsburgh Pirates at 1:10 p.m. on Sunday, May 14. Be sure to get to Chase Field early because the first 10,000 moms will receive a Diamondbacks Mother’s Day clutch, courtesy of PetSmart. Tickets start at $19 per person. Spa Spoiled The gift of indulgence is hard to beat, and that’s probably why the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia, a AAA Four Diamond resort, is celebrating moms all month long. The resort’s Joya spa is offering a Mother’s Ultimate Relaxation Package throughout the month of May. The package includes an 80-minute massage, 50-minute facial and a hydrating manicure or pedicure for $399. Don’t let a great gifting moment slip away from you this Mother’s Day. Plan ahead and remember great gifts can come from outside of a gift box too. Beyond brunch: 5 ideas for Mother’s Day The Phoenician has been hosting afternoon tea, an English tradition, for nearly 30 years.
