Sports are an important part of the community, bringing friends and family together to play and cheer for their favorite teams. Including every single impactful sports item would be impossible, so we’ve highlighted just a few of the most memorable high school teams and players. BROPHY MEMORABLE TEAMS Football: 2005, 2007: The mid-2000s was an era of dominance for the Broncos football team. Brophy’s 2005 season resulted in a 13-1 record that culminated in one of the great upsets in state title game history. Trailing by five points as the fourth quarter wound down against two-time defending champion Hamilton, sophomore Bryan Berens led the Broncos on a 99-yard, 17-play drive that ended with a touchdown pass to Matt Smith. The 2006 season ended in disappointing fashion, with a loss to Chandler in the state quarterf inals. But Brophy returned to form the next year, as the team finished off Desert Vista in the title game for a 12-2 record and second state title in three seasons. Memorable players from that era include quarterback Bryan Berens, running backs Ray Polk and Bobby Rodrigues, and receivers Sean Lieb and Matt Smith. PLAYERS Riggs Lennon, Boys Soccer Lennon was one of the greatest soccer players in state history, winning the 2011 Gatorade Player of the Year award. He was a two-time first team all-American and three- time Arizona High School player of the year. Bryan Kula, Football Kula anchored the defensive line during the 1996 season, while leading the Broncos to the runner-up spot in the state championship game against Mesa Mountain View. XAVIER MEMORABLE TEAMS Xavier Badminton 2013-2016: The dominance of Xavier badminton began under long-time head coach Nancy Meyer and continued in 2016 under new coach Susan Contreras. Seniors Tatum Clarke and Emily Woodrow led the charge for Xavier, as the team won its fourth state championship in a row this past season. Xavier Crew 2015: Winning a state championship is always incredible, but a national championship? That’s as rare as it gets, and it is what Xavier’s Crew team pulled off in 2015. Coach Emily Burkett led a squad of stars that included Ellie Martin, Grace Ganz, Martha Ryan and Cami Hays. PLAYERS Khalia Lanier, Volleyball Lanier was the 2016 Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year and the 2015 Gatorade Arizona Player of the Year. She was a member of Arizona’s All-State First Team three times and was a four-year letter winner at Xavier. Her father, Bob, was an eight-time NBA All-Star. Lanier now plays outside hitter for the University of Southern California. Amanda Benson – Volleyball In 2012, Benson was the state player of the year, leading Xavier to a 34-11 record and a runner up place in the state championship.
