CALL US LAST! Classes available 24/7/365! By Elaina Verhoff Christine Fortman has a thing for flowers. And it’s no wonder. A third-generation nursery owner, she is gearing up to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Berridge Nurseries, a local independent business founded by her grandfather Jim Berridge Jr. Berridge Nurseries, located at 46th Street and Camelback Road, has been a “happy place” for generations of Arizonans. The nursery first opened on Central Avenue and Earll Drive in 1938, then moved to Camelback Road and 16th Street in 1952. It was nearly 40 years ago that the nursery moved to its current location. Fortman remembers running around the lush property as a toddler with her sister Melinda and cousin Kate before moving up to a position behind the cash register in high school. Today, Fortman and Melinda run the nursery’s daily operations while their mother, Meredith Walton remains very involved. “Our mother frequently shares her advice and experiences from running the business more than 40 years,” Fortman says. “We tour growing grounds and travel to industry market shows each year. It is truly a family affair.” In a world where local independent businesses come and go and big box stores reign supreme, what keeps the family-owned nursery going strong after 79 years? Its location nestled in the shadow of Camelback Mountain and Zen-like ambiance make Berridge a true destination. Fortman says customers rely on Berridge staffers for their industry knowledge, as almost all are certified nursery professionals and/or certified master gardeners. “We have several employees who have been with the nursery for almost 20 years, and one has been here over 45 years,” Fortman says. “This is a chosen profession they love.” Kathy Rice, a Berridge customer for over 15 years, first started coming to the nursery when she moved here from Ohio. As a Midwest transplant, Rice says she needed some serious guidance to understand which plants would work in the Arizona climate, noting Berridge saved her a lot of money by helping her choose plants that would thrive in the desert. “It’s laid out so beautifully and everyone is incredibly helpful with recommendations,” said Rice. The close relationship between customers and staff benefits the nursery too. “We learn about popular trends, interests and needs, because our long-term customers are very open with their feedback,” said Fortman. “Because of this, we are better able to source the products that are in high demand.” And what is in demand these days? Arcadians are crazy about Iceberg Roses, the nursery’s top selling rose variety. And when it comes to roses, with more than 100 varieties, Berridge is the place to go. Roses were Fortman’s grandfather’s favorite crop. Fortman says her family plans to continue to serve future generations of Arcadians. “We love what we do and hope that it shows!” Mark your calendar for Saturday, April 8, and bring the whole family to the 19th Annual Art in the Garden at Berridge Nurseries. The event will feature food trucks, gardening sessions, cooking demonstrations by a local chef plus artists and farmers’ market vendors selling a selection goods throughout the nursery’s sprawling grounds. Confirmed artists and vendors include Iconic Cocktail, Noble Bread, Mama’s Cold Brew, Bear and the Honey Specialty Bakery, Belinda’s Pickles, Quarter Circle 70, The Oxide Studio, Beth Allen, All the Tiny Pieces, Mary Opat, Ann Osgood, and Queso Good gourmet quesadilla food truck. — Find more info on Berridge Nurseries Art in the Garden at http://bit.ly/2n828tw.
